emissions<\/h2>\n<p>Working with aggregate supplier, Breedon Aggregates, Scottish Water are investigating the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/data-driven-insights-support-constructions-net-zero\/118145\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">techniques that are cutting carbon from concrete<\/a> across their sites in Scotland.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"bLqF7NKV3lI\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Scottish Water Cut Carbon From Concrete\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bLqF7NKV3lI?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Two new types of concrete have been developed using production techniques that cut up to 70% of emissions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/what-are-the-next-steps-for-making-longer-lasting-concrete\/114025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">compared to traditional concrete<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Concrete manufacturing is one of the largest sources of carbon emissions<\/h3>\n<p>David Lavery, project manager at Scottish Water said: \u201cIf the manufacturing of concrete was a country, globally it would be the third largest producer of carbon emissions, producing around 8% of the world\u2019s total.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile there have been numerous developments in concrete over the past 100 years, the basic process of making it has remained much the same since the Romans invented it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese new techniques cut the amount of cement needed which dramatically reduces the amount of carbon dioxide produced in the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven that concrete is such an important component in construction because of its strength and versatility, we can make significant reductions in our emissions by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/how-to-specify-building-products-to-minimise-whole-life-embodied-carbon-emissions\/118391\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">using lower carbon alternatives<\/a> at our sites.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>This is the first instance of widespread adoption of Cemfree and CarbonCure<\/h3>\n<p>Scottish Water is looking to adopt two new products \u2013 Cemfree and CarbonCure \u2013 currently being rolled out by its supply chain partner Breedon Aggregates at its yards in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>During the delivery of a recent project at Dalmarnock Wastewater Treatment Works, Aaron Lucid, business development manager from Cemfree said;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been fantastic to be part of this innovative project with Scottish Water to help them reach their net zero targets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After carrying out vigorous testing and lab trials in collaboration with Scottish Water and Breedon, it\u2019s exciting and rewarding to see Cemfree Concrete successfully be poured on-site in Glasgow, offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/graphene-enhanced-concrete-build-sustainable-future%e2%80%af\/111736\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vast carbon savings to the project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s always a pleasure to work with likeminded people who are dedicated to cutting their carbon, and we look forward to supporting Scottish Waters use of Cemfree at every stage on their net zero mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Cutting carbon in concrete is part of Scottish Water&#8217;s net zero targets<\/h3>\n<p>Scottish Water has committed to meeting net zero total emissions by 2040, and net zero operational emissions by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Reid, Scottish Water\u2019s zero emissions general manager said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a really exciting development for Scottish Water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have successfully trialled these products across a small number of sites over the last couple of years and I am delighted that we are using them more widely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a business, we have made some incredibly bold and brave commitments in reducing our carbon emissions, and I believe these technologies will go some way to delivering on those
