To address this challenge, organizations must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Address cross-organisational boundary challenges;<\/li>\n<li>Recognize organisational technology silos;<\/li>\n<li>Create an automation fabric strategy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Challenge 2: Processes are unorganised<\/h4>\n<p>Another key issue when implementing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flowforma.com\/why-its-vital-to-advance-your-process-automation-plan-and-how-to-triumph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">widescale process automation strategy<\/a>\u00a0is that businesses are already struggling with an automation backlog.<\/p>\n<p>Processes are unorganised and run in myriad places, such as packaged applications, homegrown applications, DPA systems, robotic process automation (RPA), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction\/construction-technology-news\/low-code-vs-no-code-process-automation-whats-the-difference\/116496\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low-code\/no-code platforms<\/a>. The challenges here are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Most of these technology silos are deeply embedded in business operations and aren\u2019t going anywhere anytime soon.<\/li>\n<li>As organisations embrace end-to-end automation, complex processes will cross these technology silos.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Challenge 3: Spreadsheets and paper remain everywhere within businesses<\/h4>\n<p>Processes running across numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flowforma.com\/blog\/the-growing-cost-of-ownership-of-legacy-or-inactive-platforms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">legacy systems<\/a>\u00a0create challenges to a collective and functional automation strategy.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, processes running in spreadsheets, email, and with paper dependencies are increasingly problematic.<\/p>\n<p>These processes don\u2019t run on managed platforms that can integrate into end-to-end automated processes. Forrester&#8217;s 2022 DPA survey indicates that almost a third (31%) of organisations still have many or most of their processes running with dependencies on paper.<\/p>\n<h3>Process optimisation is critical to automation<\/h3>\n<p>We associate process optimisation with process automation, however they\u2019re actually two separate exercises but have similar end goals.<\/p>\n<p>Process optimisation efforts focus on the analysis and potential re-engineering of organizational processes.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of the tools that support process optimisation are: process mining, task mining, process modeling, and documentation.<\/p>\n<p>Process optimisation efforts increasingly lead to process automation \u2014 but not always.
