Upgrading these homes to a minimum of EPC C would cost over \u00a3156bn.<\/p>\n<h3>Higher energy efficiency will reduce household bills<\/h3>\n<p>The UK has the oldest housing stock in Europe,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/74n5c4m7.r.eu-west-1.awstrack.me\/L0\/https:%2F%2Fwww.bre.co.uk%2Ffilelibrary%2FBriefing%2520papers%2F92993_BRE_Poor-Housing_in_-Europe.pdf\/1\/0102018533c168ba-ff477e1b-93a7-4eae-862c-08c722058ed2-000000\/vdBQ74vlB72XDB_Q5peAUCJr6QI=301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with almost 38% of homes being built prior to 1946.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This means that many homes will need drastic upgrading to meet anticipated future regulatory changes. A home with a higher EPC rating is likely to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/retrofitting-solution-energy-cost-of-living-climate-crises\/117649\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">better insulated and efficient<\/a> which will reduce energy usage and keep bills down.<\/p>\n<h3>But there are concerns over the cost of retrofitting UK homes<\/h3>\n<p>Of the \u00a3156bn to upgrade energy-inefficient homes to EPC C, Outra estimates almost 80% (79.85%) of the tab would be picked up by owner-occupiers. The already stretched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/social-housing-regulation-bill-how-can-digitisation-improve-social-housing-standards\/113332\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social housing sector<\/a> faces a bill of almost \u00a312bn.<\/p>\n<p>Community Action on Fuel Poverty estimates that there are <a href=\"https:\/\/fuelpovertyresource.org.uk\/fuel-poverty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4.5m households in fuel poverty<\/a>, with areas such as the North West and Wales most severely affected.
