A Lusson Ltd worker fell through a collapsed floor, suffering a broken wrist and open fracture to his left leg, after it was overloaded with heavy pallets<\/h2>\n

A building company has been fined \u00a366,667 after a worker fell through a collapsed floor that was still under construction and was injured.<\/p>\n

The Lusson Ltd worker was one of three people on the first floor of a building being constructed in Croham Valley Road, Croydon on 23 June 2021.<\/p>\n

The worker fell through when the incomplete floor collapsed under excessive weight<\/h3>\n

Construction on the first floor was not complete and the structure could not tolerate excessive weight.<\/p>\n

Several pallets of blocks were lifted onto the incomplete concrete beam and block floor using a loader crane, eventually causing the floor to collapse.<\/p>\n

One of the three workers fell to the ground and suffered an open fracture to his left leg as well as a broken wrist.<\/p>\n

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Lusson Ltd did not take any steps to prevent falls from height and they failed to establish a safe system<\/a> of work for this task.<\/p>\n

Safe working practice could have easily avoided the accident<\/h3>\n

Lusson Ltd, of Barking Road, London, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 13(1) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015<\/a> and was fined \u00a366,667 and ordered to pay costs of \u00a31,907 at Westminster Magistrates Court on 21 December 2022.<\/p>\n

HSE inspector Owen Rowley said: \u201cThis incident could so easily have been avoided by simply carrying out correct control measures and safe working practices<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cCompanies should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action against those that fall below the required standards.\u201d<\/p>\n
