&#8216;Roads North of the Thames&#8217; package of works developing the Lower Thames Crossing has been awarded to Balfour Beatty in a \u00a31.2bn contract.<\/p>\n<p>The Lower Thames Crossing will create a new connection under the River Thames to increase capacity and ease congestion in the South of England.<\/p>\n<h3>Modular cosntruction will be utilised to reduce carbon emissions<\/h3>\n<p>Balfour Beatty will deliver over 10 miles of new highways to connect the M25 at Junction 29 and the A13 with the Lower Thames Crossing tunnel at Tilbury, Essex as part of the contract.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the company will deliver 49 structures including bridges and major viaducts.<\/p>\n<p>Balfour Beatty will utilise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/four-advantages-of-modular-construction\/119388\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">modular construction techniques<\/a> to build the structures offsite in a controlled factory environment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/building-offsites-zero-carbon-toolkit\/118319\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">significantly reducing carbon emissions<\/a> by minimising the number of lorry movements and material deliveries to and from site.<\/p>\n<p>This approach will support Balfour Beatty\u2019s commitment to going Beyond Net Zero Carbon by 2040, as well as National Highways\u2019 low carbon targets for the project.<\/p>\n<h3>The Lower Thames Crossing contract will promote local and national economic growth<\/h3>\n<p>Throughout construction, Balfour Beatty will look to spend \u00a3500m with local businesses and supply chain partners and will set up an \u2018Operator Skills Hub\u2019 to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/causeway-construction-talk-podcast-digitalisation-skills\/112107\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">training programmes to upskill plant operators<\/a> and inspire the next generation of talent in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>At construction peak, Balfour Beatty will directly employ a workforce of around 2,000 including approximately 150 apprenticeship, graduate and trainee positions.<\/p>\n<p>Leo Quinn, group chief executive of Balfour Beatty, said: \u201cThe Lower Thames Crossing is a significant scheme &#8211;
