{"id":125667,"date":"2023-05-03T08:02:28","date_gmt":"2023-05-03T07:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=125667"},"modified":"2023-05-10T09:32:24","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T08:32:24","slug":"donaldson-timber-systems-offers-timber-frame-apprenticeship-west-herts-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/donaldson-timber-systems-offers-timber-frame-apprenticeship-west-herts-college\/125667\/","title":{"rendered":"Donaldson Timber Systems to offer timber frame apprenticeship programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Donaldson Timber Systems (DTS) has partnered with West Herts College to offer a timber frame apprenticeship programme in support of the next generation of talent<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0UK built environment is responsible for approximately 25% of total UK greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Timber is a sustainable resource that brings several advantages, but\u00a0the biggest hurdle surrounding the use of timber in the UK\u00a0is education.<\/p>\n<p>The timber frame apprenticeship will include four days per week on-site, delivered by one of DTS\u2019 service level agreement partners, Bedfordshire-based S.E. Carpentry.<\/p>\n<p>One day per week the apprentices will attend the College to work on in-class modules, including an additional module that will focus on modern methods of construction (MMC) for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westfraser.com\/products\/building-wood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">timber frame.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What does the\u00a0timber frame module cover?<\/h3>\n<p>The module covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an understanding of construction technology;<\/li>\n<li>health and safety;<\/li>\n<li>an introduction to MMC;<\/li>\n<li>and understanding construction information, materials and the installation process, together with site \/ project communications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Simon Horn, technical development manager at DTS, said: &#8220;We were connected to West Herts College through our work supporting a regional consortium of housing providers and Local Authorities, to improve the delivery of housing at a local level and develop local enterprise partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Supporting skills development in the next generation is crucial to the ongoing evolution of the UK construction industry, and is something we\u2019re committed to at DTS, so working with the College to grow and support talent was a great fit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This apprenticeship programme is a pilot project for DTS and is something we would like to roll out in more areas, with more partners, in time. We\u2019re aiming to provide real opportunities and increase motivation, while simultaneously helping to fill the skills gap in our industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sian Williams, curriculum director at West Herts College, said: &#8220;We\u2019re excited to partner with DTS on this programme to give our learners an opportunity to receive hands-on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/timber-skills-action-plan-unveiled-futurebuild-london\/122310\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">training and develop their understanding of Modern Methods of Construction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has been fantastic to work closely with DTS to develop MMC modules that incorporate new design and technologies that enable our learners to gain the most current and update knowledge and skills linking into a variety of curriculum courses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gill Worgan, principal and chief executive of West Herts College Group, commented: &#8220;Our partnership with the team at Donaldson Timber Systems is so important to us, and a fine example of what can be achieved when education and employers work together. I hope we can build on these successes going forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Trained to work on DTS\u2019 timber frame build systems<\/h3>\n<p>Spencer Earl, managing director of S.E.
