Once set, there is virtually no opportunity for the viaduct to be redesigned due to tight project delivery schedules.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Cutting raw materials and embedded carbon<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OptiStruct\u00ae has allowed the HS2 collaboration team to redefine their processes for civil engineering. OptiStruct\u00ae is the same technology used by Altair for components and assemblies within aircraft and automotive vehicles. As well as saving time, the software can also minimise the amount of raw material needed for construction projects.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur innovation project with Altair is a game-changer. It gives engineers a tool to explore alternative designs that were not previously feasible due to time constraints. By cutting development time, automatically running dozens of combinations of the design variables, the technology allows to identify solutions that minimise embedded carbon,\u201d said<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tomas Garcia, head of civil engineering structures at HS2.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Streamlining viaduct design<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Engineers can use the technology to modify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/hs2-unveils-new-off-site-manufactured-thames-valley-viaduct\/126878\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viaduct design<\/a>, providing more flexibility. For example, engineers can increase the length between supporting piers and decrease the overall number of piers required.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The software considers the viaduct\u2019s operational requirements, such as speed, frequency, and braking load. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/new-hs2-viaduct-has-been-approved-adding-birminghams-skyline\/127150\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new 150-meter viaduct<\/a>, which will serve as the pathway for trains leading into Birmingham&#8217;s upcoming Curzon Street Station, was recently approved by Birmingham City Council.
