{"id":131093,"date":"2023-08-09T12:02:53","date_gmt":"2023-08-09T11:02:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=131093"},"modified":"2023-08-09T12:02:53","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T11:02:53","slug":"hinkley-point-c-unrest-continues-steel-erectors-down-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/hinkley-point-c-unrest-continues-steel-erectors-down-tools\/131093\/","title":{"rendered":"Hinkley Point C unrest continues as steel erectors down tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<div class=\"standfirst\">\n<h2>Steel erectors working for contractor William Hare downed tools yesterday, the latest of the unrest at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfenergy.com\/energy\/nuclear-new-build-projects\/hinkley-point-c\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hinkley Point C<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>An unofficial one-day stoppage of work took place yesterday, as the new nuclear power station site Hinkley Point C continues to be embroiled in labour disputes and unrest.<\/p>\n<p>Steel erectors working for contractor William Hare downed tools in response to existing shift rotation patterns on the site, wanting to change the current 11\/3 and 10\/4 rotation to a regular 10\/4 arrangement.<\/p>\n<h3>The unrest follows a spate of similar walkouts at Hinkley Point C<\/h3>\n<p>On the supply side, 150 platers, welders and sheet metal workers at Darchem Engineering in Stockton-Upon-Tees (a Hinkley Point C supplier) secured a pay boost worth up to 13% after seven weeks of walk-out action.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">GMB WIN \ud83d\udea8: Darchem Engineering workers secure 13% pay rise \u270a<\/p>\n<p>More 150 workers stuck together through 7 weeks of strike action \ud83d\udc4f\ud83d\udc4f<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; GMB Union (@GMB_union) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GMB_union\/status\/1688831828122099712?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 8, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>After employers cut travel allowances by 50%, around 125 mechanical and electrical workers under the MEH Alliance staged a walk-out in late July.<\/p>\n<p>Since that incident, it is understood that the MEH Alliance contractors \u2013 Altrad, Balfour Beatty Bailey, Cavendish Nuclear and Doosan Babcock \u2013 have agreed to restore travel allowances.<\/p>\n<h3>More walkouts are planned at Hinkley Point C<\/h3>\n<p>Over 300 scaffolders working for BYLOR, a joint venture of French firm Bouygues Travaux Publics (TP) and Laing O\u2019Rourke, downed tools on 2 August.<\/p>\n<p>They are understood to be planning weekly unofficial strike action of one day a week in regard to pay rates and shift patterns on site.<\/p>\n<p>A contractor commented that: \u201cThings have been bubbling for a while. We have been wanting the mechanical rate; our travel pay is way below what the MEH Alliance get.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis week, we just made a stand. It\u2019s not a happy camp here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<h3>The pay deal will help workers struggling with the cost-of-living crisis<\/h3>\n<p>Andrew Blunt, GMB organiser, said: \u201cWorkers have stood strong together for what they are worth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were offered split deals, real terms pay cuts, and deals that would have delayed any 2024 discussions \u2013 leaving them further out of pocket.
