{"id":131401,"date":"2023-08-15T13:51:30","date_gmt":"2023-08-15T12:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=131401"},"modified":"2023-08-15T13:51:30","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T12:51:30","slug":"unite-students-redevelop-university-of-durhams-rushford-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/projects\/unite-students-redevelop-university-of-durhams-rushford-court\/131401\/","title":{"rendered":"Unite Students to redevelop the University of Durham\u2019s Rushford Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Unite Students has begun work to improve Rushford Court in partnership with the University of Durham<\/h2>\n<p>Rushford Court is a 358-bedroom student property that will house students from the University\u2019s College of St Hild and St Bede from September during the redevelopment of the University\u2019s Leazes Road site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/projects\/unite-students-property-refurbishment-scheme-worth-24m-revealed\/129110\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unite Students<\/a>, the biggest provider of student housing in the UK, is currently enhancing and expanding its property known as Rushford Court in Durham.<\/p>\n<p>Rushford Court dates back to 1853 when it was known as County Hospital. It was repurposed as student housing by Unite Students in 2018. Previously, it provided temporary housing for the university&#8217;s John Snow College during the 2019\/20 academic year.<\/p>\n<h3>Rushford Court will get a host of new facilities<\/h3>\n<p>This new building will be built into the site\u2019s existing sloped ground. Improvements include a new two-story facility building that will house a junior common room with a caf\u00e9, bar, social space, reception, and study area.<\/p>\n<p>The Harding Building will be updated to accommodate college staff offices, study spaces, and welfare facilities. The historic entrance will also be rebuilt, and the current reception building will be transformed into a gym and yoga area.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the University of Durham plans to establish a new 18th college at Rushford Court.<\/p>\n<h3>Unite Students will look to create sustainable accommodation<\/h3>\n<p>The building\u2019s committee have promoted the new sites&#8217; biodiversity and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/net-zero-placemaking-carbon-impact\/131373\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon reduction<\/a>, which exceed the necessary requirements. According to the committee, the plans will reduce the risk of losing space to houses of multiple occupations (HMOs).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis exciting development will enable the university to provide a home to our much-loved Hild Bede College while we redevelop their historic home. Following this, it is intended for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitestudents.com\/durham\/rushford-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rushford Court<\/a> to become our newest college, creating a thriving community of students at all levels of study, from all subject areas,\u201d commented Jeremy Cook, Pro-Vice Chancellor at Durham University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an exciting step forward as it allows us to strengthen our ongoing partnership with Durham University.
