{"id":131502,"date":"2023-08-17T09:55:10","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T08:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=131502"},"modified":"2023-08-17T09:55:10","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T08:55:10","slug":"northern-ireland-slashes-planned-road-schemes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/northern-ireland-slashes-planned-road-schemes\/131502\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Ireland slashes planned road schemes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland has put 17 of 28 planned road schemes on pause, citing financial and environmental constraints<\/h2>\n<p>Citing the department&#8217;s \u201cchallenging budgetary position\u201d, as well as &#8220;constrained resources and commitments under the Climate Change (NI) Act 2022\u201d, only nine of the 28 planned road schemes now look likely to go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>The department\u2019s statement continued: \u201cThis combination of factors has changed the landscape considerably, meaning delivery of the major roads programme as previously set out is no longer sustainable nor appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seven of the surviving nine schemes being prioritised are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction\/bim-news\/improving-britains-broken-roads-infrastructure-technology\/127528\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">road schemes<\/a>, with one footbridge and a single light rail development.\u00a0 All paused projects are road building.<\/p>\n<h3>Schemes that survived the cull:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A6 Randalstown\/Castledawson (\u00a31.6bn)<\/li>\n<li>A5 Western Transport Corridor (\u00a31.6bn)<\/li>\n<li>A6 Derry\/Dungiven Phase 1 (\u00a3170m-\u00a3200m)<\/li>\n<li>A6 Derry\/Dungiven Phase 2 (\u00a3170m-\u00a3200m<\/li>\n<li>Belfast Rapid Transit 2 (\u00a3142m-\u00a3148m)<\/li>\n<li>Newry Southern Relief Road (\u00a385m-\u00a3100m)<\/li>\n<li>A4 Enniskillen Southern Bypass (\u00a325m-\u00a330m)<\/li>\n<li>A29 Cookstown Bypass (\u00a355m-\u00a365m)<\/li>\n<li>Lagan Pedestrian &amp;
