{"id":132501,"date":"2023-09-15T10:46:22","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T09:46:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=132501"},"modified":"2024-09-10T16:12:58","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T15:12:58","slug":"hydrogen-fuel-retrofit-project-balfour-beatty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/hydrogen-fuel-retrofit-project-balfour-beatty\/132501\/","title":{"rendered":"Balfour Beatty secures funding for hydrogen fuel retrofit project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Balfour Beatty has secured over \u00a3240,000 of funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/emerging-energy-technologies-fund-hydrogen-innovation-scheme-successful-projects\/#:~:text=The%20scheme%2C%20which%20closed%20to,and%20demonstration%20facilties%20and%20equipment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish Government&#8217;s Emerging Energies Technology Fund<\/a> for their new hydrogen fuel retrofit project<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/hydrogen-construction-equipment-russian-natural-gas\/107034\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydrogen fuel<\/a> retrofit project will be match-funded by Balfour Beatty and will allow the construction company to retrofit two gritters and two operations and maintenance vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Once retrofitted, the vehicles will be trialled on the Connect Roads M77\/Glasgow Southern Orbital project.<\/p>\n<p>The trial has been predicted to deliver a 40% reduction in\u00a0carbon emissions from each of the four retrofitted vehicles.<\/p>\n<h3>The Connect Roads M77\/GSO depot will become Scotland&#8217;s first hydrogen construction hub<\/h3>\n<p>Balfour Beatty will facilitate quarterly sessions during the first year of the trial to allow customers, supply chain partners and other key stakeholders to hear about the progress and performance of the four retrofitted vehicles and see them in action.<\/p>\n<p>Hector MacAulay MBE, Balfour Beatty regional managing director of Scotland, said: \u201cReducing emissions from plant on sites is a key challenge faced by the entire construction and infrastructure industry. It is a challenge that must be faced collectively if we are to drive down our emissions and play our part in reaching the Scottish Government\u2019s net zero by 2045 target.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhilst electric solutions are starting to enter the market, they are not yet a realistic option for heavy plant. Dual fuel represents an alternative solution, and we are looking forward to seeing the benefits that this trial will deliver, as we look to develop a practical solution for our industry, alongside the Scottish Government.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The hydrogen fuel retrofit project will also facilitate skills development in the region<\/h3>\n<p>The Scottish Government commented: \u201cWe are pleased to note today\u2019s announcement by Balfour Beatty, following their successful funding bid into our Emerging Energy Technologies Fund &#8211; Hydrogen Innovation Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As confirmed by the First Minister in May, we have so far awarded grant funding of over \u00a37m from the HIS to 32 innovative projects that will support the development of the hydrogen economy in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe projects supported through this funding call will progress innovative solutions to address and overcome key challenges related to scaling up hydrogen production, storage, and distribution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The awarded funding will also enable the development of hydrogen innovation centres across Scotland that will act as hubs of ongoing hydrogen innovation activity, providing facilities that will support skills development and the incubation and development of hydrogen technologies across the value chain;
