{"id":133007,"date":"2023-09-29T12:59:51","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T11:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=133007"},"modified":"2023-09-29T12:59:51","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T11:59:51","slug":"government-reveals-timetable-biodiversity-net-gain-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/government-reveals-timetable-biodiversity-net-gain-policy\/133007\/","title":{"rendered":"Government reveals timetable for Biodiversity Net Gain policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The government has confirmed that legislation to enforce Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) rules will be introduced in November<\/h2>\n<p>This will make<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/over-half-planners-will-struggle-biodiversity-net-gain-deadlines\/132209\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Biodiversity Net Gain<\/a> a legal requirement marking a significant step toward making new housing, commercial, and infrastructure projects more environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n<p>From January 2024, developers in England must achieve a 10% net gain in biodiversity when constructing new housing, industrial, or commercial developments.<\/p>\n<p>They will be required, by law, to make a positive contribution to the local environment, such as creating new habitats and green spaces.<\/p>\n<h3>Smaller businesses have been awarded a grace period<\/h3>\n<p>These regulations will be enforced by April 2024 for smaller developers, while Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects are expected to comply by 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/delays-biodiversity-net-gain-policy-sparks-anger-environmentalists\/132900\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BNG<\/a> is integral to the country\u2019s ambition to reach its goal of halting the decline in species abundance by 2030. The government has already allocated over \u00a315m to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.local.gov.uk\/pas\/topics\/environment\/biodiversity-net-gain-local-authorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Local Planning Authorities<\/a> in their preparations for the new policy.<\/p>\n<p>Many housing developers are already successfully integrating the policy principles into their projects.<\/p>\n<h3>By the end of November, comprehensive guidance and regulations will be published, including:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A statutory biodiversity metric, crucial for calculating the correct biodiversity gain.<\/li>\n<li>A draft biodiversity gain plan template to help developers prepare for the planning application stages.<\/li>\n<li>A Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan template, outlining the long-term management of improved on-site and off-site habitats.<\/li>\n<li>A set of\u00a0 guidelines offering further advice for landowners, developers, and Local Planning Authorities regarding their roles and responsibilities in achieving mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Helping developers understand Biodiversity Net Gain by January 2024<\/h3>\n<p>This guidance will help developers and planners understand the tools and information needed to implement the policy come January 2024. It is hoped that this will ensure that the construction of much-needed homes aligns with nature preservation and benefits local environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiodiversity Net Gain will ensure new developments work for both wildlife and people.
