{"id":133078,"date":"2023-10-03T11:54:45","date_gmt":"2023-10-03T10:54:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=133078"},"modified":"2023-10-03T11:54:45","modified_gmt":"2023-10-03T10:54:45","slug":"cement-2-zero-road-greener-cement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/cement-2-zero-road-greener-cement\/133078\/","title":{"rendered":"Cement 2 Zero: the road to greener cement"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Cement 2 Zero project has completed its first trial melt, aiming to develop large-scale zero-emissions cement production<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpiuk.com\/research-project-cement-2-zero.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cement 2 Zero<\/a> project involves collaboration from a range of partners, such as the Materials Processing Institute, University of Cambridge, CELSA Steel UK, Atkins, Balfour Beatty, Day Aggregates, and Tarmac.<\/p>\n<p>The project secured \u00a36.5m in government funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).<\/p>\n<h3>Cement 2 Zero continues to experiment with materials<\/h3>\n<p>The trial melt was completed using a seven-tonne Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) at the Materials Processing Institute. Three more melts are planned before industrial-scale trials at CELSA&#8217;s EAF in Cardiff.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Cyrille Dunant&#8217;s discovery at the University of Cambridge forms the basis of the process, using recycled cement as a flux to produce &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/digital-twin-net-zero-emissions\/94185\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">zero-emissions<\/a>&#8216; cement. The pilot-scale EAF experiments use recycled cement processed by Day Aggregates and LKAB, with scrap steel inputs from CELSA.<\/p>\n<p>Testing and refining the process is ongoing, with Tarmac assessing the new clinker&#8217;s properties.
