{"id":134392,"date":"2023-11-06T13:26:39","date_gmt":"2023-11-06T13:26:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=134392"},"modified":"2023-11-06T13:26:39","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T13:26:39","slug":"planning-profession-report-from-rtpi-shows-salaries-in-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/planning-profession-report-from-rtpi-shows-salaries-in-decline\/134392\/","title":{"rendered":"Planning profession report from RTPI shows salaries are in decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The State of the Profession report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtpi.org.uk\/policy-and-research\/topics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)<\/a> has found increased gender parity in the field, but resourcing challenges are still impacting the profession<\/h2>\n<p>The RTPI&#8217;s analysis covers the planning profession in the UK, with a focus on understanding the needs of members and enabling an informed dialogue with the government.<\/p>\n<p>Shedding light on the challenges and opportunities facing the planning profession in the 2020s, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtpi.org.uk\/research\/2023\/november\/state-of-the-profession-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">State of the Profession<\/a> report shows that as climate change, housing shortages, and public health continue to influence policy,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/planning-system-progressive-placemaking\/133991\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a robust planning strategy<\/a> is needed more than ever.<\/p>\n<h3>Positive findings from the report include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The UK has a professional planning workforce of approximately 22,000 individuals in 2023, showcasing stability when compared to 2019 figures<\/li>\n<li>Women now comprise 40% of the planning workforce, and gender parity was observed among professionals under the age of 42<\/li>\n<li>Progress in racial diversity is evident and steadily on the rise<\/li>\n<li>75-80% of planners are RTPI members, underlining the institute&#8217;s significance to the profession<\/li>\n<li>The next generation of planning professionals appears promising, with over 4,000 students attending accredited planning programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>However, the planning profession faces stagnant wages and a lack of public sector employment<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately 50% of planners are employed in private sector roles, especially within consultancies, while public sector employment has faced a decline<\/li>\n<li>Real median salaries for planners have witnessed a steady decline over the past 15 years, emphasising the need for a closer look at compensation within the profession<\/li>\n<li>Resourcing challenges, skills shortages, and political uncertainty pose formidable hurdles for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtpi.org.uk\/policy-and-research\/topics\/public-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public sector planning<\/a> across the UK<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Resource-starved Local Planning Authorities are a cause for concern<\/h3>\n<p>Victoria Hills, chief executive of the Royal Town Planning Institute, said: &#8220;There are many encouraging statistics that we can find in this report, and it\u2019s positive to see the profession taking encouraging steps in becoming more diverse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, while the planning profession is maintaining steady overall numbers, it continues to face significant strains due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/75-of-local-authority-planners-overstretched-according-to-rtpi\/120107\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">under-resourcing of Local Planning Authorities<\/a>.
