The House of Lords Built Environment Committee will hear from Daiwa<\/a> on their use of modern methods of construction (MMC) and how it could be used more successfully in the UK<\/h2>\n

The House of Lords MMC inquiry seeks to understand the barriers facing the wider deployment of MMC<\/a> as a means of meeting the Government’s 300,000 homes a year target.<\/p>\n

In the face of recent economic challenges, several MMC firms have gone into administration, such as Ilke Homes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Chaired by Lord Moylan, the inquiry is also exploring if the Government’s level of support of MMC developments is suitable or needs revision.<\/p>\n

Two panels of witnesses will speak today<\/h3>\n

Katie Gilmartin, head of business development and innovation at Platform Housing Group, will speak at 10:45am (5 December 2023).<\/p>\n

This section will focus on the experience of housing associations as a customer of MMC and whether the Affordable Homes Programme<\/a> has increased their use of MMC.<\/p>\n

The committee will also hear about the experience of residents in MMC-delivered homes and the policy changes needed to facilitate the construction of more MMC homes.<\/p>\n

The inquiry will examine international deployments of MMC<\/h3>\n

At 11:30am, the committee will hear from Craig Garbutt, managing director, and Nicky Jones, business development manager, both from\u00a0Daiwa House Modular Europe UK.<\/p>\n

Daiwa recently established a UK arm of their business, and signed on for a 259-home residential development in Elephant and Castle in a joint venture with Lendlease.<\/p>\n

Daiwa sold around 40,600 homes in 2022 in Japan<\/a>, around 30,000 more than market peers. The company also has a presence in Germany, the Netherlands and other countries.<\/p>\n

In this panel, the committee will hear about Daiwa’s experience working in these countries and explore the factors that have made MMC more successful abroad, providing an international comparison to highlight where changes are needed for similar success in the UK.<\/p>\n

These committee sessions are open to the public and can be streamed live on Parliament TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n
