{"id":139797,"date":"2024-05-20T14:45:09","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T13:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=139797"},"modified":"2024-05-20T14:45:09","modified_gmt":"2024-05-20T13:45:09","slug":"fixing-dangerous-homes-england-would-save-over-1-5bn-health-social-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/fixing-dangerous-homes-england-would-save-over-1-5bn-health-social-care\/139797\/","title":{"rendered":"Fixing dangerous homes in England could save over \u00a31.5bn in health and social care"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>New research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ageing-better.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Ageing Better<\/a> has found that the NHS could save nearly \u00a3600m annually by fixing dangerous homes where the head of the household is aged 55 or older<\/h2>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/cpec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Care Policy and Evaluation Centre<\/a>, based at the London School of Economics and Political Science, formal care costs for older people could be reduced by \u00a31.1bn a year by 2027 by eliminating the most serious risks in Britain\u2019s poorest-quality homes.<\/p>\n<p>Removing just three common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/deregulated-housing-health-impacts\/135708\/\">health hazards from homes<\/a>, bad condensation, excess cold, and rising dampness would lower social care costs considerably.<\/p>\n<p>If the nation&#8217;s poor-quality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/tag\/housing-crisis\/\">housing crisis<\/a> is resolved, there is potential for a further \u00a33.5bn annual savings in unpaid care costs for older people.<\/p>\n<h3>People aged 55 and over account for more than half of the NHS\u2019s annual first-year treatment costs<\/h3>\n<p>While people aged 55 and over live in around one in three of England\u2019s most dangerous homes, they account for \u00a3595m or more than half of the NHS\u2019s spending for injuries and illnesses caused by poor-quality housing.<\/p>\n<p>The new analysis revealed that the significant health savings from home improvements mean the estimated \u00a34.6bn cost to repair all Category 1 hazards, which pose a risk of death or serious injury in older people&#8217;s homes, would be recouped in just under eight years.<\/p>\n<h3>Excess cold claims the lives of up to 9,000 people a year in England and Wales<\/h3>\n<p>Focusing investment on mitigating excess cold in every home in the country headed by an older person would deliver an estimated \u00a3325m worth of savings to the NHS every year.<\/p>\n<p>The potential savings from fixing dangerous homes for older people in England are significant, with the repair costs being paid back within nine years.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Carole Easton OBE, chief executive at the Centre for Ageing Better, said: \u201cFixing unsafe homes is a value-for-money solution that will not only help people to live healthier and longer lives, but will also reduce pressures on health and social care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith so much supporting evidence pointing to significant benefits, it beggars belief that home improvement is not higher up the political agenda.
