{"id":139898,"date":"2024-05-23T07:32:25","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T06:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=139898"},"modified":"2024-05-22T15:40:13","modified_gmt":"2024-05-22T14:40:13","slug":"700000-uk-construction-workers-have-suffered-injuries-caused-by-poor-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/700000-uk-construction-workers-have-suffered-injuries-caused-by-poor-mental-health\/139898\/","title":{"rendered":"700,000 UK construction workers have suffered injuries\u00a0caused by poor mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>1.5m construction workers in the UK have worked in a dangerous environment whilst suffering from poor mental health, with <a href=\"https:\/\/qbeeurope.com\/news-and-events\/press-releases\/15m-uk-construction-workers-at-risk-with-circa-700-000-injuries-already-caused-from-poor-mental-health\/#_ftn1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearly 700,000 suffering injuries<\/a> because of it<\/h2>\n<p>Business insurer QBE has found that around half of all UK construction workers have worked in dangerous environments whilst suffering with poor mental health.<\/p>\n<p>On behalf of QBE, Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 362 UK construction workers aged 18+ from 24 April to 2\u00a0May 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Three quarters of UK construction workers with poor mental health said at some point they continued to work in a dangerous situation despite the increased risk involved.<\/p>\n<h3>Key findings from the research include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>More than one in five (22%), or 682,000 workers report they have suffered an injury at work as a result of poor mental health.<\/li>\n<li>For those that have continued to work with mental ill health; the majority (76%) say mental ill health increases risk of injury.<\/li>\n<li>Mental health costs UK construction industry at least \u00a31.2bn per annum with 1.7 days lost per worker and 5.1m lost working days last year.<\/li>\n<li>More than one quarter (27%) are uncomfortable discussing mental health with their employer.<\/li>\n<li>One third (32%) of workers said their employer has never once checked in with them about their mental health.<\/li>\n<li>Absent construction workers are likely to lie about the reason when it is related to mental health and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ts-p.co.uk\/insights\/mental-health-in-construction-the-silent-epidemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> give a different reason for their time off<\/a>; over a third (38%) of respondents said they told an employer the reason they were absent from work was due to a physical condition, when it was in fact due to poor mental health.<\/li>\n<li>36% have been prevented from speaking openly about their mental health due to workplace stigma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Poor mental health is the single biggest cause of missed workdays in the UK<\/h3>\n<div class=\"section-standard-article add-top-spacing add-separation-spacing\">\n<p>The research also shows that in the UK construction industry, more than 5.1m working days were lost to poor mental health last year, compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/statistics\/dayslost.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">18m\u00a0working days<\/a> for the whole UK economy. The construction sector is one of the largest in the UK economy \u2013 employing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/groups\/bis-construction-sector-team#:~:text=Construction%20is%20one%20of%20the,of%20the%20total%20UK%20workforce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3.1m people or over 9%<\/a> of the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>According to government reports, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/workplace-stress-in-construction\/136487\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stress, depression or anxiety<\/a> account for almost half (49%) of all work-related ill health. And it is the biggest cause of lost workdays in the UK with work-related ill health accounting for\u00a0<em>over<\/em> half (54%) of working days lost.<\/p>\n<h3>Openness and acceptance are key<\/h3>\n<p>David Dexter, practice leader, Risk Solutions at QBE Europe, said: \u201cMental health issues are the biggest cause of lost workdays in the UK and a contributing factor in many workplace incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK construction industry is no exception;
