{"id":140924,"date":"2024-06-26T10:56:29","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T09:56:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=140924"},"modified":"2024-06-26T10:56:29","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T09:56:29","slug":"over-6-5-million-people-could-stuck-dangerous-homes-end-next-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/over-6-5-million-people-could-stuck-dangerous-homes-end-next-parliament\/140924\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 6.5m people could be stuck in dangerous homes by end of next parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>More than 6.5m people could still be living in dangerous homes by the end of next parliament, despite manifesto pledges to tackle the poor quality housing, say Safe Homes Now campaigners<\/h2>\n<p>Both the Conservatives and Labour have committed to investing a minimum of \u00a36bn in the next parliament in upgrading England\u2019s homes.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/ageing-better.org.uk\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Ageing Better<\/a> analysis has found that this funding could not repair all homes with poor energy efficiency to a high standard.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis revealed that the manifestos offer an inadequate solution to those who live in dangerous homes for reasons other than being too cold or too warm.<\/p>\n<h3>8m people live in dangerous homes in England<\/h3>\n<p>Currently, there are around 3.7m dangerous homes in England.<\/p>\n<p>This includes homes that are in disrepair, unsanitary, have outdated sewage facilities, have electrical or fire hazards and do not meet basic legal health and safety standards.<\/p>\n<h3>Current pledges will only reduce this figure to 6.6m<\/h3>\n<p>Analysis revealed that the number will only be reduced to 2.9m dangerous homes before 2030, even if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/general-election-2024-what-each-party-promise-means-for-uk-construction\/140517\/\">Labour or the Conservatives can fully deliver on their home energy efficiency plans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By failing to fix dangerous homes, political parties risk missing out on the benefits that would boost the economy and alleviate pressure on health and social care.<\/p>\n<p>A more comprehensive investment in home improvement policies would bring \u00a35.9bn in health benefits and help 3.1m people every year, according to research by the cross-party think tank Demos.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Carole Easton OBE, chief executive at the Centre for Ageing Better, said: \u201cSuch is the poor state of the nation\u2019s housing, the level of investment promised in Labour and Conservative election manifestoes is unlikely to repair all cold homes within the next five years to a sufficiently high standard.
