{"id":141055,"date":"2024-06-28T10:36:03","date_gmt":"2024-06-28T09:36:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=141055"},"modified":"2024-06-28T10:36:03","modified_gmt":"2024-06-28T09:36:03","slug":"election-coverage-not-addressing-real-issues-facing-construction-sector-survey-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/election-coverage-not-addressing-real-issues-facing-construction-sector-survey-says\/141055\/","title":{"rendered":"Election coverage not addressing real issues facing construction sector, survey says"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Only 3% of construction industry professionals surveyed believe election manifestos have addressed real issues facing the construction sector<\/h2>\n<p>With the UK off to the polls on 4 July, question marks over key issues remain a sticking point for the UK construction sector and built environment.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/general-election-2024-what-each-party-promise-means-for-uk-construction\/140517\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snap election<\/a> is the latest twist in a challenging period for the construction industry, marked by regulatory reform, runaway inflation, and a bleak economic outlook.<\/p>\n<p>NBS and Glenigan\u00a0(part of Byggfakta Group) surveyed construction professionals to identify the major issues missing from the election coverage.<\/p>\n<h3>The sector feels overwhelmingly overlooked by current political conversation<\/h3>\n<p>The survey, which included responses from 505 industry professionals across various company sizes and turnover brackets, posed the question: &#8216;What\u2019s missing from the election coverage?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It found that, overwhelmingly, the construction industry has been left dissatisfied by lacklustre manifestos.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the issues plaguing the sector have been left out of the conversation altogether by political parties.<\/p>\n<p>Only 3% of respondents believed that the election coverage had addressed all the key issues impacting the sector, pointing to widespread frustrations.<\/p>\n<h3>Key findings of the NBS and Glenigan survey:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Over a third of respondents emphasised the need for more building materials to be produced domestically<\/strong>, reducing the reliance on imports, and bolstering local economies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>One in three participants identified potholes and the broader challenge of crumbling infrastructure as areas needing more focus<\/strong>. SMEs with 1-9 employees and those with annual turnovers under \u00a350m were notably concerned, highlighting the potential impact on transportation and logistics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Skills shortages remain a critical issue<\/strong>, with a quarter of respondents agreeing that more needs to be done to attract and train talent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A quarter of those surveyed flagged late payment culture as a key challenge<\/strong>.
