{"id":141214,"date":"2024-07-01T11:04:56","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T10:04:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=141214"},"modified":"2024-07-01T11:04:56","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T10:04:56","slug":"re-flow-field-management-empowers-rail-industry-meet-compliance-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/re-flow-field-management-empowers-rail-industry-meet-compliance-standards\/141214\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-flow Field Management empowers rail industry to meet compliance standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The rail industry needs greater education, mentorship, and cultural change to attract young talent, say experts at Rail Live<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt is an attractive place to work, but it\u2019s not attracting people.\u201d This quote from CEO of Young Rail Professionals, Bonnie Price, summed up this year\u2019s Rail Live, held at Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre from 19th to 20th June.<\/p>\n<p>With all the latest tech and innovations at the event, it was easy to see why the rail industry is very appealing.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, as with much of the infrastructure sector, worryingly low <a href=\"https:\/\/re-flow.co.uk\/news\/recruitment-and-retention-rsma-annual-conference-addresses-issues-in-the-employee-pipeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recruitment and retention<\/a> rates remain throughout the industry.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"eVgacLuhqc8\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Re-flow Field Management at Rail Live 2024\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eVgacLuhqc8?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3>A run down from Rail Live 2024<\/h3>\n<p>Day one began with a panel discussion on this topic between Bonnie Price (CEO, Young Rail Professionals), Neil Robertson (chief executive, NSAR), Sam Riley (recruitment consultant, Advance TRS and YRP External Engagement Manager), Caroline Lee, (senior social values advisor, Volker Rail), and Lorna Gibson, (training director, QTS).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141221\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141221\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-141221\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/LtOR-Neil-Robertson-Caroline-Lee-Lorna-Gibson-Sam-Riley-Bonnie-Price-300x143.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/LtOR-Neil-Robertson-Caroline-Lee-Lorna-Gibson-Sam-Riley-Bonnie-Price-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/LtOR-Neil-Robertson-Caroline-Lee-Lorna-Gibson-Sam-Riley-Bonnie-Price.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panel from LtoR: Neil Robertson, Caroline Lee, Lorna Gibson, Sam Riley, Bonnie Price \u00a9 Re-Flow Field Management<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They debated whether rail is an attractive industry to young people and agreed that not enough is being done to educate the new generation about career opportunities in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The panel said that young people could only identify jobs like conductor, ticket inspector, and train driver and that they weren\u2019t aware of the numerous other careers in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>They also worried that the rail industry would receive more than its fair share of bad press due to an overabundance of negative stories concerning rail strikes, ticket prices, and fines.<\/p>\n<p>The impression is that rail is an expensive industry struggling with a lack of investment.<\/p>\n<p>Bonnie Price went on to say that a lot of young people want to make a difference within their community, and that the rail industry should appeal to this when showing off their careers.<\/p>\n<p>As Elaine Clark (chief executive officer, Rail Forum) alluded to in a later talk on creating sustainable railways, rail is an economic enabler \u2013 it has social value.<\/p>\n<p>It provides good jobs for otherwise low-income workers and is clearly an essential part of the country\u2019s infrastructure for getting working people from A to B.<\/p>\n<h3>More apprenticeships and mentoring are needed in the rail industry<\/h3>\n<p>The panel were asked for closing statements, and most called for even more mentoring and apprenticeships.<\/p>\n<p>As Neil Robertson (chief executive, NSAR) said: \u201cApprenticeships are a well-known pathway into a career. Young people see the benefit of them. It\u2019s been a game-changing piece of software for us,\u201d said Zoe Loveday, sales manager Europe at LB Foster.<\/p>\n<p>The software allows office staff to track operative training and qualifications to ensure the right people are working with equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Automation can be incorporated into the program to alert staff when certifications are about to expire or if an operative has been scheduled to work on a job but does not have the correct requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Also, current customers talk about how easy the software is to use, from apprentices to senior management.<\/p>\n<p>Lily Iris Clarke, ecologist at Chevron Green Services, said: \u201cWe\u2019ve been finding Re-flow really useful. It has everything in the one place. There\u2019s not so many different things we need to fill out.
