{"id":142369,"date":"2024-07-29T13:01:22","date_gmt":"2024-07-29T12:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=142369"},"modified":"2024-07-29T13:16:43","modified_gmt":"2024-07-29T12:16:43","slug":"chancellor-rachel-reeves-expected-infrastructure-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/chancellor-rachel-reeves-expected-infrastructure-projects\/142369\/","title":{"rendered":"Chancellor Rachel Reeves expected to axe infrastructure projects\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to announce several infrastructure projects are to be axed to fill a recently discovered \u00a320bn shortfall in the country&#8217;s finances<\/h2>\n<p>Infrastructure projects to face the axe in the announcement later today are expected to include the Stonehenge tunnel, the previous Government&#8217;s scheme to deliver 40 new hospitals and the A27 Arundel bypass.<\/p>\n<p>Labour did not mince their words in attributing the \u00a320bn hole in public services as a \u201cshocking inheritance\u201d from the Conservatives.<\/p>\n<h3>Infrastructure projects potentially facing the axe or postponement include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>HS2 tunnel extension to the Euston Terminus from Old Oak Common<\/li>\n<li>the \u00a3500m <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/restoring-your-railway-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Restoring Your Railway Fund<\/a>, which aimed to restore 45 local railways<\/li>\n<li>the \u00a31.7bn A303 dual carriageway Stonehenge bypass<\/li>\n<li>the A27 Arundel bypass in West Sussex<\/li>\n<li>the already delayed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/government-not-deliver-40-new-hospitals-2030-nao-report\/129897\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Hospitals programme<\/a>, which promised 40 new hospitals across the UK<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Further savings will be identified by a \u201coffice of value for money\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>This new office will use civil service resources to find and recommend savings for the ongoing financial year. Surplus publically owned property will be sold and &#8220;non-essential&#8221; spending on consultants will be rolled back.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Guardian, a Treasury source said the announcement was not &#8220;a return to austerity&#8221;
