{"id":142643,"date":"2024-08-07T09:18:46","date_gmt":"2024-08-07T08:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=142643"},"modified":"2024-08-07T09:18:46","modified_gmt":"2024-08-07T08:18:46","slug":"majority-engineers-unfamiliar-with-overheating-home-regulations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/majority-engineers-unfamiliar-with-overheating-home-regulations\/142643\/","title":{"rendered":"Majority of engineers unfamiliar with overheating home regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Zehnder Group UK and CIBSE Journal have published a study into understanding of overheating homes, finding majority do not understand &#8216;Approved Document O&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Climate solutions specialists and CIBSE Journal have collaborated and published a study into understanding of overheating home regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The results found that the majority of building service engineers did not fully understand UK Building Regulations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/part-o-new-building-regulations-overheating\/109272\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Approved Document O<\/a>, the document regarding overheating regulations for buildings.<\/p>\n<h3>Most building service engineers did not understand overheating regulations<\/h3>\n<p>The study found that 34% of the respondents claimed to know Document O well, with 46% saying they understood the document in theory but were unsure how to put it into practice, and 19% responded saying they had no understanding at all.<\/p>\n<p>The study also ranked where respondents placed building overheating in a list of priorities, finding that it ranked quite low with design, quality, building regulations, and energy efficiency all ranking above overheating.<\/p>\n<h3>Overheating is a growing issue in the UK<\/h3>\n<p>The context of the study shows that overheating is an issue that is only getting worse in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Regulations state that if a property exceeds 26\u00b0C for extended periods of time, it can have adverse affects on occupants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/09613218.2017.1256136#:~:text=Overheating%20has%20been%20particularly%20notable%20in%20new%20homes,mortality%2C%20especially%20amongst%20more%20vulnerable%20members%20of%20society.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health, wellbeing, and productivity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But according to the Climate Change Committee, about a fifth of homes in the UK already exceed this threshold, and worse still, if climate change continues as it is, around 9 in 10 homes will be at serious risk of overheating, should the temperature rise to 2\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Bennett, indoor air quality expert at Zehnder Group UK, said: &#8220;The issue of overheating isn\u2019t going to go away; it\u2019s only going to get worse as climate change has more of an impact, heatwaves become more frequent and we continue to create highly energy-efficient homes that are effectively turning into \u2018hot boxes\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we create these energy efficient homes and high-rise apartment buildings of lightweight structural materials that are notorious for solar gains and lack thermal mass as well as greenhouse levels of glass, we end up spending a lot of money trying to reduce the temperature within those properties.
