We\u2019re looking ahead now to delivering the final stages of tunnelling, and celebrating the breakthrough of both TBMs at Washwood Heath next year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>The &#8216;Mary Ann&#8217; is digging the tunnel<\/h3>\n<p>A tunnel boring machine (TBM), named the Mary Ann, is digging the Bromford tunnel. The machine weighs 1,600 tonnes, and is 125m long.<\/p>\n<p>The machine has excavated 1.75 miles of the first bore, having started in an underground box in Water Orton last year.<\/p>\n<p>40m below ground, the machine has dug below the Park Hall Nature Reserve and River Tame, and is currently passing below the Castle Vale.<\/p>\n<p>From there it will travel below the M6 and through Washwood Heath.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"UZSLEzcvT9I\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"HS2\u2019s tunnelling into Birmingham reaches halfway point\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UZSLEzcvT9I?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3>The Bromford tunnel is due for completion in 2027<\/h3>\n<p>From here, a second TBM, names Elizabeth, started the Bromford tunnel&#8217;s second bore in March 2024, and will finish her journey towards the end of 2025. HS2 will travel through the tunnel before raising onto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/two-new-hs2-viaducts-in-west-midlands-gain-planning-approval\/138513\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viaducts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ventilation shaft for the tunnel is due to be finished in 2027, completing the structure.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Powell, HS2\u2019s head of delivery said: &#8220;We\u2019re now at peak construction in the West Midlands, and it\u2019s great to celebrate the halfway point for the \u2018Mary Ann\u2019 tunnel drive into Birmingham.
