{"id":144993,"date":"2024-10-25T11:03:21","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T10:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=144993"},"modified":"2024-10-25T11:03:33","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T10:03:33","slug":"construction-office-jobs-more-stressful-than-site-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-office-jobs-more-stressful-than-site-jobs\/144993\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction office jobs more stressful than site jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>University of Cambridge researchers found that 70% of site workers and 85% of office workers in construction described their jobs as moderately stressful, very stressful, or extremely stressful<\/h2>\n<p>Published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2227-9032\/12\/21\/2117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Healthcare<\/a> journal, the study surveyed 40 construction professionals from 12 different employers across four building sites and found that all job roles reported a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/workplace-stress-in-construction\/136487\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high level of stress<\/a>&#8211; with office jobs taking the lead.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 40 people surveyed, 33 were male and 7 female; 19 were speciality subcontractors, 16 were general contractors and 5 were consultants.<\/p>\n<p>Roles ranged from site management to mechanical, electrical and plumbing subcontractors.<\/p>\n<h3>Major sources of stress were identified as:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>High workloads<\/li>\n<li>Tight deadlines<\/li>\n<li>Situations being out of one&#8217;s control<\/li>\n<li>Being responsible for the safety of others<\/li>\n<li>Job complexity and organisational pressures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ways of coping with workplace stress reported in the study included relying on support networks, hobbies outside of the workplace and boundary-setting.<\/p>\n<p>The importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/mental-health-in-construction-stress-management-vital\/127714\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coping mechanisms<\/a> was echoed by Olivia Remes, co-author of the study and a mental health researcher at the Cambridge Laing O&#8217;Rourke Centre at the Department of Engineering: &#8220;Opening up to family, friends, or colleagues about workplace stress can be helpful. Having a robust support network acts as a buffer against stress and is beneficial for mental health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Blocking it out&#8221; is not a viable long term solution<\/h3>\n<p>Dr Remes went on to say: &#8220;Blocking out or bottling up stressful problems may lead to feelings of helplessness and other negative consequences. Instead, connecting with supportive others during stressful times can be more effective.
