{"id":147557,"date":"2025-01-22T07:51:31","date_gmt":"2025-01-22T07:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=147557"},"modified":"2025-01-22T09:10:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T09:10:00","slug":"ukifs-announces-construction-partners-shortlist-for-prototype-fusion-energy-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/ukifs-announces-construction-partners-shortlist-for-prototype-fusion-energy-plant\/147557\/","title":{"rendered":"[VIDEO] UKIFS announces construction partners shortlist for\u00a0prototype fusion energy plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The shortlists for Engineering Partner and Construction Partner to develop a prototype fusion energy plant in West Burton in Nottinghamshire have been released<\/h2>\n<p>The West Burton prototype fusion energy plant project is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/step.ukaea.uk\/what-is-step\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production)<\/a> programme, which will be delivered by a public-private team comprised of UKIFS\u00a0(UK Industrial Fusion Solutions Ltd), UKAEA (UK Atomic Energy Authority) as fusion partner and the yet-to-be-chosen engineering and construction partners.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ftin5qX7iJQ?si=MAYZpk6M6JbdGGjB\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The initial contract period for both Construction and Engineering Partners will run until 2029 and is valued at several hundred million pounds. Further phases will continue the long-term collaboration that builds progressively with the programme.<\/p>\n<h3>STEP aims to boost the UK&#8217;s fusion industry and commercialisation potential<\/h3>\n<p>STEP announced that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/ukaea-step-fusion-programme-spot-secured-by-gleeds\/119930\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Burton power station site<\/a> would also serve as their home in October 2022, creating several highly-skilled jobs during construction and operation of the plant, as well as benefitting surrounding industries and supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>The prototype fusion power plant will create energy by heating a mixture of deuterium and tritium(both kinds of hydrogen) to form a plasma in a device called a tokamak.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_147565\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-147565\" style=\"width: 794px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-147565 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMAGE_NEW_Tokakmak_Side_View-1.jpg\" alt=\"A tokamak, which will be part of the prototype fusion power plant in West Burton\" width=\"794\" height=\"719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMAGE_NEW_Tokakmak_Side_View-1.jpg 794w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMAGE_NEW_Tokakmak_Side_View-1-300x272.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMAGE_NEW_Tokakmak_Side_View-1-768x695.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMAGE_NEW_Tokakmak_Side_View-1-464x420.jpg 464w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMAGE_NEW_Tokakmak_Side_View-1-696x630.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMAGE_NEW_Tokakmak_Side_View-1-610x552.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-147565\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">@STEP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The plasma will reach temperatures ten times that of the core of the sun, but produce no carbon throughout this process. There is also no risk of a &#8216;runaway reaction&#8217; with fusion- the challenge instead is maintaining the reaction, rather than controlling it.<\/p>\n<p>This process creates helium and releases huge amounts of energy, which will be used to power turbines to generate electricity. It also generates a small amount of tritium, which can be circled back into the plant&#8217;s fuel.<\/p>\n<p>The West Burton site will demonstrate the prototype&#8217;s net energy capabilities, fuel self-efficiency and route to plant maintenance.<\/p>\n<h3>The shortlisted organisations for STEP\u2019s Engineering Partner are:<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Celestial JV,\u00a0<\/strong>consisting of Eni UK Limited as the lead member and AtkinsRealis, Jacobs Clean Energy (now Amentum), Westinghouse and Tokamak Energy as other members.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phoenix (UK) Fusion Limited<\/strong>, consisting of Cavendish Nuclear Ltd as the lead member, KBR Ltd and Assystem Energy and Infrastructure Ltd as other members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The shortlisted organisations for STEP\u2019s Construction Partner are:<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Inovus Infrastructure,\u00a0<\/strong>consisting of Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering as the lead member and Vinci Construction, AtkinsRealis, Mott Macdonald and WSP as other members.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ILIOS<\/strong>, consisting of Kier Infrastructure and Overseas as the lead member and Bam Nuttal, Nuvia Limited, AECOM Ltd, Turner and Townsend Infrastructure Ltd and Amanda Levete Architects Ltd as other members.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ferrovial Mace JV<\/strong>, consisting of Ferrovial Construction UK Ltd as the lead member and Mace Consult Ltd as the other member.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A crucial part of STEP\u2019s mission is to develop a world-leading fusion supply chain to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of a new technology and emerging industry.<\/p>\n<h3>Ensuring the UK is at the forefront of nuclear innovation<\/h3>\n<p>Paul Methven, CEO of UK Industrial Fusion Solutions will now enter detailed discussions known as \u2018competitive dialogue\u2019 with UKIFS as the multi-stage procurement process progresses towards final partner selection in late 2025\/early
