Ambitious government building plans<\/h3>\n<p>The UK government\u2019s \u201cGet Britain Building Again\u201d programme has set the target of\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/how-the-uk-can-build-1-5m-homes-on-time-and-on-budget-with-a-3d-laser-scanning-assist\/147643\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">constructing 1.5m homes<\/a> over five years. This effort is guided by a revised National\u00a0 Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), prioritising brownfield redevelopment and selective greenbelt land release (referred to as grey belt). The plan also includes support for New\u00a0 Towns and infrastructure improvements.<\/p>\n<p>While there is scepticism that these numbers are achievable in the timescale, these initiatives promise to boost employment for contractors. However, rising workplace fatalities highlight the need for better training and strict safety compliance.<\/p>\n<p>Contractors should adopt best practices like the Common Assessment Standard (CHAS Elite) to enhance safety, credibility and tender prospects.<\/p>\n<h3>2. This centralised hub aims to streamline government procurement activities, increase transparency and enhance efficiency, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).<\/p>\n<p>With features like a unique supplier identifier and a \u201cTell Us Once\u201d system for supplier data, the platform should simplify processes for both suppliers and contracting authorities. However, it does not replace prequalification checks or due diligence.<\/p>\n<p>To prepare for registration, suppliers should gather essential information, including company details, financial standing and records of exclusion grounds.<\/p>\n<p>However, be aware that while the CDP simplifies data handling through its centralised approach, it does not verify or evaluate supplier qualifications, making it crucial for suppliers to maintain compliance with prequalification standards to enhance their eligibility for government tenders.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Workforce challenges in construction<\/h3>\n<p>Persistent labour shortages remain a significant issue for the sector, with employment in\u00a0 construction 10% below pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n<p>Brexit has reduced the availability of European workers, while the government seeks to reduce reliance on overseas workers through initiatives like Skills England and changes to the apprenticeship levy.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, new regulations under the Employment Rights Bill will enforce bans on zero-hour contracts, grant flexible working rights and strengthen union protections.<\/p>\n<p>Employers should explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/employing-an-apprentice\/get-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apprenticeship grants<\/a> and prepare for upcoming changes to employment laws.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Businesses must ensure compliance with updated regulations and promote a culture where safety is embedded at every level.<\/p>\n<p>Contractors should implement regular safety audits and training programmes to minimise risks. Adopting recognised standards can enhance safety credibility.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Mental health as a strategic goal<\/h3>\n<p>The construction sector has the UK\u2019s second-highest suicide rate, with many workers reluctant to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/time-to-talk-ep-1-interview-tom-milham\/147667\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> discuss mental health issues.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A 2024 survey by Causeway Technologies found over half of construction workers had experienced mental health challenges, and 12% reported suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Employers can lead change by prioritising mental health as a strategic goal.
