The Caterpillar 772G, 775G, and electric Sany trucks unload their loads inland, and the dozer pushes the material outwards.<\/p>\n<p>The dozer operator works approximately half a kilometre away from the machine, eliminating the risks associated with landslides and collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Technology company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steer.no\/steer-remote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steer Remote<\/a>, who supplied the remote-controlled bulldozer to civil engineering contractor H\u00e6hre for the Frier Vest project, have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trimble.com\/en\/solutions\/technologies\/machine-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> integrated Trimble machine control<\/a> into the system, enabling the dozer blade to be automatically controlled via GPS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a much safer method than equipping operators with life vests, oxygen tanks, and mechanisms for automatic window breaking,\u201d says Nj\u00e5l Gjermundshaug, CEO of Steer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_147617\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-147617\" style=\"width: 696px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-147617 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/63e38f992d06fb63179bef4d_image-8-p-500-1024x733.png\" alt=\"The operator chair for the remote-controlled bulldozer\" width=\"696\" height=\"498\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-147617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9Steer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The operator is located around 500m away from the machinery, reducing the risks of collapses or landslides.<\/p>\n<p>The operator chair uses joysticks and two or three control panels with touch screens. The control panels are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Steer monitor- Operator is able to configure the Steer Remote system, machine ignition, handbrake, rpm etc.<\/li>\n<li>Manufacturer monitor- This is the monitor from the cabin of the machine. This is typically used to turn on lights, activate GradeAssist, display fuel level, warning\/error messages from the machine etc.<\/li>\n<li>Machine control monitor- For machine control and GPS Support. (Leica, Topcon, Trimble etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The technology could become standard in large earthmoving operations<\/h3>\n<p>Steer hopes that the success of the Caterpillar D8 bulldozer on the Frier Vest industrial park will set<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/iot-technology-construction\/137294\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> remote-controlled<\/a> bulldozers as the standard for marine filling projects.<\/p>\n<p>The technology could also be applied to quarry and mining operations, with a single operator managing multiple loaders and bulldozers.<\/p>\n<p>Steer have already tested automated solutions at the Eikefet and Seljestokken quarries, retrofitting Caterpillar 772G dump trucks to move rock from various blast sites to the crusher for processing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis technology allows us to efficiently deliver on demanding projects without jeopardizing operator safety,\u201d says Asle St\u00e5land, project director at H\u00e6hre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe experience has been very positive so far.
