{"id":149139,"date":"2025-03-03T12:08:21","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T12:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=149139"},"modified":"2025-03-03T12:08:21","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T12:08:21","slug":"government-announces-major-hospice-investments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/projects\/government-announces-major-hospice-investments\/149139\/","title":{"rendered":"Government announces major hospice investments"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Last week the government announced major investments for end-of-life care in England, starting with a \u00a325m facility upgrade and refurb investment<\/h2>\n<p>The funding will see a further \u00a375m investment from April, making \u00a3100m in hospice investments for the financial year 2024\/25.<\/p>\n<p>The investments will help to improve compassionate care for patients.<\/p>\n<h3>Buildings and surrounding areas will be transformed with hospice investments<\/h3>\n<p>Planned improvements include creation of outdoor garden areas and patient room renovations.<\/p>\n<p>The first \u00a325m cash injection will be given through Hospice UK, allowing hospices to purchase new medical equipment and technology, refurbish buildings, upgrade facilities for both patients and family, and improve energy efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>These investments will affect over 170 hospices throughout the country, both ones run by organisations and independent ones.<\/p>\n<p>The next \u00a375m investment will contribute to capital projects such as major building works and facility modernisation through digital transformation and modernising IT systems.<\/p>\n<p>The investment comes as part of the Plan for Change and an ambition to overhaul the health plan.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cLargest investment in a generation\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Stephen Kinnock, minister for care, said: \u201cThis is the largest investment in a generation to help transform hospice facilities across England. From upgrading patient rooms to improving gardens and outdoor spaces, this funding will make a real difference to people at the end of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHospices provide invaluable care and support when people need it most and this funding boost will ensure they are able to continue delivering exceptional care in better, modernised facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby Porter, CEO of Hospice UK, said: \u201cThe announcement before Christmas of \u00a3100m of additional funding for hospices in England was a significant boost, and today\u2019s news of the allocation of the first \u00a325m of this funding will be a huge relief for our members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral years of rapidly rising costs have curtailed the extent to which hospices have been able to invest in their infrastructure for the longer term. This additional support will enable them to do so &#8211; and relieve the immediate pressures on hospice finances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hospice sector is ready to support the government\u2019s ambition to shift more care into the community. This couldn\u2019t be more important for people approaching the end of life, when it\u2019s vital to have the right care, in the right place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe greater stability provided by the government\u2019s funding injection this year and next gives us a golden opportunity to now reform the palliative and end of life care system, so it\u2019s fit for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick Carroll, chief executive of children\u2019s palliative care charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.togetherforshortlives.org.uk\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Together for Short Lives<\/a>, said: \u201cWe\u2019re really pleased that the Department of Health and Social Care has moved quickly to finalise the details of this much-needed funding and ensure it is ready for distribution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that children\u2019s hospices across England face an increasingly challenging funding landscape, with costs continuing to rise significantly.
