US president Donald Trump has announced that the UK will no longer be subject to 50% steel and aluminium tariffs<\/h2>\n

The president has stated that they will \u201cprovide different treatment\u201d to the UK regarding US steel tariffs.<\/p>\n

A deal has been agreed between the nations, but has not yet been signed.<\/p>\n

The deal may ease the pressure on increased prices for steel construction material imports, but not negate it outright.<\/p>\n

How the tariffs could affect UK construction<\/h3>\n

While the remaining tariffs will still be a knock to UK steel exporters to the US, the reduction will put them in a more advantageous position than Chinese or European exporters who will still suffer from the 50% charge.<\/p>\n

However, while US tariffs do not apply to UK imports from the US, prices are still likely to be higher for UK imports as US steel becomes more competitive within the US.<\/p>\n

As the US makes foreign imports more expensive, they become less competitive and US-made steel becomes more so. This means US steel manufacturers can increase their prices and still sell.<\/p>\n

This would include driving up prices for UK importers, and the construction industry will be faced with the bill as a result of costs getting passed on, or will be forced to seek their steel from elsewhere.<\/p>\n

In 2024, the UK imported 6.6 million metric tons of steel<\/a>, with the US accounting for about 7% of this<\/a>. While not a majority, with most of the UK’s steel exports coming from countries such as India, Germany, and Spain, it’s also not a negligible amount. Price increases will still see yet another tightening on the construction industry’s wallets.<\/p>\n

General tariffs remain for the UK<\/h3>\n

The deal targets steel and aluminium specifically<\/a>, meaning the blanket 25% levy on British exports will still be in effect.<\/p>\n

The deal is also a delicate one, with it being made clear that the 50% US steel tariff could still be put in place if the White House \u201cdetermines that the United Kingdom has not complied with relevant aspects\u201d.<\/p>\n

“We need the UK government[…] to get that deal over the line and remove tariffs altogether”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The deal was agreed upon by business secretary Jonathan Reynolds and US trade representative Jamieson Greer.<\/p>\n

Gareth Stace, director general of UK Steel, said: \u201cContinued 25% tariffs will benefit shipments already on the water that we were concerned would fall under a tax hike.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need the UK government to apply rocket boosters to those negotiations with the US administration to get that deal over the line and remove tariffs altogether on our imports and exports to the US market, which is our second biggest export market.\u201d<\/p>\n

British steel industry already in a delicate state<\/h3>\n

In April, a bill was passed in record time to save the British Steel industry<\/a>. The Steel Industry (Special Measures) Act passed control of British Steel to the government.<\/p>\n

The former owner of the company, Jingye, were losing money on British Steel at a rate of up to \u00a3700,000 per day after acquiring it in 2020.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Reynolds now controls the company\u2019s board and staff.<\/p>\n

At the time, John Foster, chief policy and campaigns officer at CBI, said: \u201cThe government\u2019s decision to take control of British Steel is a necessary outcome of last resort needed to preserve the UK\u2019s primary steel production capability.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the government\u2019s Growth Mission focused on delivering big infrastructure projects to drive economic growth, it is vital the UK doesn\u2019t lose vital steelmaking capabilities. Looking beyond today, securing a sustainable future of steelmaking must also ensure that it is supported in the transition towards electric.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a period of global instability, it is increasingly important for our resilience that we have the capability within the UK to provide the steel that we need and that isn\u2019t subject to the volatile backdrop provided by tariffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The current avoidance of US steel tariff could potentially allay these fears<\/h3>\n

Of the acquisition, British prime minister Keir Starmer, said: \u201cToday, my government has stepped in to save British Steel. We are acting to protect the jobs of thousands of workers, and all options are on the table to secure the future of the industry.\u00a0Delivering security and renewal for working people is at the heart of my Plan for Change.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis government is turning the page on a decade of decline, where our manufacturing heartlands were hollowed out by the previous government.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn recent weeks alone, we have announced the expansion of Heathrow airport and the building of the biggest theme park in Europe in Bedford. We are reforming our planning rules to build 1.5m homes, and the infrastructure the nation desperately needs. New roads, railways, schools, hospitals, grids and reservoirs. British steel will be the backbone as we get Britain building once more.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a government of industry. That\u2019s why we\u2019ve secured a better deal for the workers of Port Talbot. It\u2019s why we fought to secure the future of Harland & Wolff. It\u2019s why we\u2019ve pledged \u00a3200m to Grangemouth. Our industry is the pride of our history \u2013 and I want it to be our future too.<\/p>\n
