{"id":152292,"date":"2025-06-17T10:52:49","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T09:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=152292"},"modified":"2025-06-17T10:53:04","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T09:53:04","slug":"structures-fund-pledge-1bn-motor-infrastructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/structures-fund-pledge-1bn-motor-infrastructure\/152292\/","title":{"rendered":"Structures Fund to pledge \u00a31bn to motor infrastructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The package includes a \u00a3590m investment into <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalhighways.co.uk\/our-roads\/lower-thames-crossing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Lower Thames Crossing<\/a>, bringing it one step closer to starting<\/h2>\n<p>The Structures Fund follows an announcement prior to the spending review of \u00a315.6bn for city region transport.<\/p>\n<p>This further funding will bring upgrades and repairs to bridges, flyovers, and tunnels across the country.<\/p>\n<h3>Roughly 3,000 bridges need reinforcing<\/h3>\n<p>These bridges are unable to support the heaviest vehicles, such as agricultural and freight transport, slowing down journey times for the delivery of vital materials. Furthermore, the number of bridge collapses has risen.<\/p>\n<p>The Structures Fund will tackle projects like this, repairing bridges, flyovers and tunnels for motor traffic, increasing their weather resilience for more extreme weather events, and enabling them to take the demands of modern vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a3590m will be put towards the Lower Thames Crossing, set to be the UK\u2019s longest road tunnel and connecting Kent and Essex under the Thames. This will allow traffic to avoid Dartford and allow easier transport to the North from the South East. Currently the Government is seeking private finance and expertise for the project, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/projects\/planning-approval-granted-for-lower-thames-crossing\/149800\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planning approval was granted in March.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>\u201cOur structures fund will make long-overdue investments\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Chancellor of the exchequer, Rachel Reeves, said: \u201cWhen it comes to investing in Britain\u2019s renewal, we\u2019re going all in by going up against the painful disruption of closed bridges, crossings and flyovers, and ensure they\u2019re fit to serve working people for decades to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s investment also goes even further and faster to spread growth by providing critical funding to take forward the Lower Thames Crossing \u2013 not just boosting connectivity in the South East, but ensuring a smoother, less congested passage of vital goods from Europe to our regions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a turning point for our national infrastructure, and we\u2019re backing it with funding to support thousands of jobs and connect communities, delivering on our Plan for Change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, said: \u201cWe\u2019re finally getting on with the Lower Thames Crossing \u2014 a crucial project to drive economic growth, that has been stuck in planning limbo for far too long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project is essential for improving the resilience of a key freight route and is critical to our long term trade with Europe.
