{"id":153187,"date":"2025-07-18T13:30:31","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T12:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=153187"},"modified":"2025-07-18T14:22:05","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T13:22:05","slug":"video-worlds-largest-crane-lifts-dome-hinckley-point-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/projects\/video-worlds-largest-crane-lifts-dome-hinckley-point-c\/153187\/","title":{"rendered":"[VIDEO] World\u2019s largest crane lifts dome at Hinkley Point C"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Big Carl, the world\u2019s largest crane, has lifted a dome weighing 245 tonnes into place on the second reactor building for Hinkley Point C<\/h2>\n<p>The dome for the Unit 2 building is 14 metres tall, topping off the building at 44 metres tall.<\/p>\n<p>Prefabrication methods have been utilised in the construction of Unit 2, both on-site and off-site, enhancing productivity, safety, and quality.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"cMLWFIwXnyU\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Unit 2 Dome Lift | Hinkley Point C\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cMLWFIwXnyU?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3>Impressive time savings<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfenergy.com\/energy\/nuclear-new-build-projects\/hinkley-point-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hinkley Point C&#8217;s<\/a> Unit 2 has taken between 20% and 30% less time to construct, despite delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, due to the experience gained from constructing Unit 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Several achievements were made in the construction of Unit 2, including 30% fewer people completing 40% more work than on Unit 1, 60% of the structures being prefabricated, more equipment being fitted at this stage than in Unit 1, and the concrete cylinder around the reactor being built 40% more quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Stuart Crooks, CEO of Hinkley Point C, said: \u201cRestarting the industry has been hard, but the second of our two identical units shows the big benefits of repeating an identical design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuild and Repeat is the best way to build new nuclear with time savings already at 20-30%. All our experience and innovation will benefit Sizewell C from the start.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Not the first time Big Carl has lifted at Hinkley Point C<\/h3>\n<p>Big Carl, a SGC-250, is named after Carl Serens, the founder of the company that made the crane. It runs on 6km of track using 96 wheels, with a maximum capacity to lift 5,000 tonnes using its 52 counterweight containers with 100 tonnes of weight each.<\/p>\n<p>The crane is powered by 12 engines, with a lifting radius of 40m. By the end of the Hinkley Point C project, it will have lifted 700 heavy components.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/video-worlds-largest-crane-lifts-final-ring-hinkley-point-c\/144676\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In October last year, <\/a>it was used to lift the final steel liner ring into place for Unit 2.
