Kiruna Kyrka, a church described as \u201cthe living room of the community\u201d, is the 16th of 23 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/heritage-buildings\/104027\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cultural buildings to relocate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The relocation is projected to finish in 2035 after eight years of planning and an estimated cost of 500m kronor (\u00a339m).<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embedded post\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/embed\/feed\/update\/urn:li:ugcPost:7353677676781486081?collapsed=1\" width=\"504\" height=\"579\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Ground preparation works for the church&#8217;s journey include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Preparatory work and widening of roads.<\/li>\n<li>Demolition of the Lombia Viaduct.<\/li>\n<li>Work with land and infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li>Ground preparations in the new location of the church.<\/li>\n<li>Relocation of Kiruna church and bell tower.<\/li>\n<li>Moving of Hjalmar Lundbohm&#8217;s grave to the church&#8217;s new location.<\/li>\n<li>Restoration of the relocation route after completed relocation.<\/li>\n<li>Design of new plot and restoration of the old one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The 40m-tall structure is rolling on remote control flatbed trailers<\/h3>\n<p>Road preparations took a year to smoothen the path of the Kiruna Kyrka, as well as widening the roads from nine to 24 metres.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The church is sitting on a beam system, then two rows of trailers were brought in&#8221; and slid underneath the beams, LKAB project manager Stefan Holmblad Johansson said. The entire load will weigh around 1,200 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>The town has a population of around 18,000, of which 6,000 residents will have to move. LKAB has offered to compensate those who must relocate, either through direct compensation or building a new residence in the new location.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But when it came to the church, we decided it was best to move it in one piece. We saw the value in that,&#8221; Holmblad Johansson continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is with great reverence we have undertaken this project,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is not just any building, it&#8217;s a church.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The belltower, which is next to but separate from the church, will be moved next week.<\/p>\n<h3>The church&#8217;s design is a homage to indigenous culture<\/h3>\n<p>Kiruna Kyrka was designed to resemble a <em>l\u00e1vvu<\/em>, a hut of the indigenous Sami people and was designed by Gustaf Wickman, a highly regarded architect who also developed many of Sweden&#8217;s banks and hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>The Sami have raised concerns about the expanding presence of LKAB&#8217;s mining operations, saying that the ancient rights of the Sami to the land could be compromised, as well as negatively impacting reindeer migration and herding, a key livelihood of many Sami communities.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;The big church move&#8217; is being televised<\/h3>\n<p>Broadcaster SVT is livestreaming the event as \u201cDen stora kyrkflytten\u201d (&#8216;the big church move&#8217;), with over 10,000 spectators anticipated at the site to watch the church&#8217;s journey.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_154280\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-154280\" style=\"width: 627px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-154280 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/the-big-church-move.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"627\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/the-big-church-move.png 627w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/the-big-church-move-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/the-big-church-move-610x343.png 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-154280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via SVT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The church was blessed by Vicar Lena Tj\u00e4rnberg and bishop \u00c5sa Nystr\u00f6m before the move.<\/p>\n<p>A variety of Swedish celebrities are in attendance, including singer Carola (who will perform at a concert) and the Swedish King, Carl XVI Gustaf. The events will also include an attempt to set a world record for the most church coffee consumed.<\/p>\n<p>The church will open at its new location at the end of the year.
