{"id":154339,"date":"2025-08-21T11:19:55","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T10:19:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=154339"},"modified":"2025-08-21T11:19:55","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T10:19:55","slug":"university-warwick-develops-digital-roadmap-accelerate-net-zero-steel-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/university-warwick-develops-digital-roadmap-accelerate-net-zero-steel-uk\/154339\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Warwick team develops digital roadmap to accelerate net zero steel in the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A University of Warwick study supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/interact-hub.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">InterAct programme<\/a> has developed a strategic digital roadmap to fast-track the UK steel sector\u2019s transition to net zero<\/h2>\n<p>Developed by a team of academics from the University of Warwick, the research identifies the most pressing barriers to adopting Industrial Digital Technologies (IDTs) and provides actionable guidance on how these barriers can be overcome towards decarbonising one of the UK\u2019s most vital industries.<\/p>\n<p>The UK steel industry \u2013 comprising over 1,100 companies and contributing \u00a32.3bn to the national economy \u2013 is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, accounting for a significant portion of global CO\u2082 emissions.<\/p>\n<h3>Making steel production more sustainable will help massively reduce emissions<\/h3>\n<p>While steel can be endlessly recycled, its production remains energy-intensive, making the drive toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/co-paper-calls-steel-dual-decarbonisation-approach\/150838\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">greener, more efficient practices<\/a> an urgent national and global priority.<\/p>\n<p>Supported by InterAct, part of the Made Smarter Innovation initiative, the research project explored how IDTs can be leveraged to support the industry&#8217;s shift to resource and energy efficiency (REE), with a special focus on overcoming sector-specific adoption challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a seven-layer hierarchical framework that maps the interdependencies between 12 critical barriers \u2013 including investment uncertainty, skills shortages, regulatory complexity, and environmental considerations \u2013 and provides clear priorities for policymakers and industry leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Using Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) modelling technique complemented with MICMAC analysis, the research team \u2013 comprising Dr. Taofeeq Ibn-Mohammed, Dr. Mehmet Chakkol and Dr. Aitana Ucl\u00e9s Fuensanta with support from Dr. Temidayo Akenroye (University of Missouri\u2013St. Louis) \u2013 not only identified obstacles the sector faces, but laid out a practical roadmap for digital transformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research provides targeted, actionable recommendations that empower decision-makers to focus their efforts where they\u2019ll have the greatest impact,\u201d said Dr. Ibn-Mohammed. \u201cA strategic blend of policy reform, technological innovation, organisational change, and smart economic planning is key to overcoming these barriers and building a greener, more competitive steel industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Enabling stakeholders to &#8216;drive meaning progress toward net zero&#8217;
