{"id":154921,"date":"2025-09-10T07:09:24","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T06:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=154921"},"modified":"2025-09-09T14:26:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T13:26:05","slug":"rics-launches-landmark-global-standard-on-responsible-ai-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/rics-launches-landmark-global-standard-on-responsible-ai-use\/154921\/","title":{"rendered":"RICS launches &#8220;landmark&#8221; global standard on responsible AI use"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has published the first global professional standard for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in surveying practice<\/h2>\n<p>Set to take effect on 9 March 2026, the <a href=\"https:\/\/consultations.rics.org\/connect.ti\/AIstandard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new standard<\/a> sets out mandatory requirements and best practice expectations for RICS members and regulated firms worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>It addresses the growing integration of AI across valuation, construction, infrastructure and land services &#8211; and aims to ensure these tools are used ethically, transparently and with professional oversight.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Guiding profession through rapid AI evolution&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>RICS said the standard represents a decisive move to guide the profession through the rapid evolution of AI technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Key provisions of the new standard include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Governance &amp; risk management:<\/strong> Firms must implement clear policies around data use, AI system governance and risk documentation, including the creation of risk registers and due diligence procedures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Professional judgment &amp; oversight: <\/strong>Surveyors must assess the reliability of AI outputs and remain accountable for all work, applying professional scepticism and expertise throughout.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transparency &amp; client communication:<\/strong> Clients must be informed, in writing, of when and how AI will be used in service delivery, including options for redress or opting out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ethical development of AI: <\/strong>For firms developing their own AI systems, the standard mandates assessments of data quality, stakeholder involvement, sustainability impact, and legal compliance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Responding to evolving technology whilst &#8220;reinforcing the core role of the surveyor&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>RICS acting president elect Maureen Ehrenberg said: \u201cArtificial intelligence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/riba-president-calls-on-architects-to-rise-to-daunting-ai-challenge\/154705\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offers real promise to the surveying profession<\/a> &#8211; but only if used responsibly and ethically.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This standard ensures surveyors remain at the forefront of innovation while protecting clients, data and public trust.
