The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has launched a survey to determine professionals’ opinions on construction standards<\/h2>\n

The global construction standards survey will gather insight into the consultation on the standards, which will combine professional standards for surveyors.<\/p>\n

The RICS Black Book guidance notes have undergone 32 separate releases between 2009 and 2021, each covering different aspects of the profession. The combination will be the global construction standard.<\/p>\n

The professional standard was penned by experts<\/h3>\n

Matt Thompson, an experienced technical author in the surveyor profession, has also recently written the 10th edition of the RIBA Handbook of Practice Management. He was backed by a group of RICS members lending their expertise.<\/p>\n

Amit Patel, RICS head of professional practice (construction), said: \u201cFor the first time, RICS is launching a Professional Standard on construction which incorporates updates that would normally be drip-fed over a ten-year period. We believe that this new model will enable professionals to update and improve their practice more swiftly and enable a more consistent framework for standards.<\/p>\n

\u201cI implore all construction professionals across the globe, whether RICS members or otherwise, to get involved and respond to this important consultation. RICS is committed to serving and improving the global built and natural environment profession, and it is our members and colleagues in connected fields that guide our professional statements, standards, and guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The public consultation will be open from 16 September \u2013 24 October 2025, and can be found here<\/a>. The final version of the professional standard is intended to launch in Q1 2026.<\/p>\n

Big changes for surveyors<\/h3>\n

Writing for PBC Today<\/a>, chartered surveyor Jen Lemen BSc (Hons) FRICS examined five key topics within planning, building, and construction that surveyors should be aware of, including:<\/p>\n

1. RICS Professional Standard Service Charges in Commercial Property (2nd Edition) \u2013 of relevance to commercial property managers
\n2. Revised RICS property measurement guidance \u2013 of importance to all surveyors, including valuers, quantity surveyors and building surveyors
\n3. Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (Commencement No. 2) Regulations 2025 \u2013 compliance required by almost all industry professionals
\n4. Building Safety Act 2022 and changes to limitation periods \u2013 of relevance to construction and design professionals
\n5. Proposed new RICS Home Survey Standard \u2013 of importance to residential surveyors providing home surveys to the public<\/p>\n

Mentioned within that article includes a consultation on the proposed RICS Home Survey Standard<\/a>, which is open until the 14th of October. Once the consultation is finished, RICS and the Home Survey Expert Group will examine the responses and finalise the second version of the Professional Standard, pending approval by RICS governance and the Standards & Regulation Board.<\/p>\n
