Jackie Maginnis, chief executive of the Modular & Portable Building Association (MPBA), has dedicated her career to championing a sector that is transforming the future of construction

With decades of experience and a reputation as one of the industry’s most trusted voices, she has seen first-hand how modular technology delivers the speed, efficiency and predictability the commercial sector demands.

With passion and pride, today Jackie shares industry insight and explains why she is on a mission to ensure MPBA members lead the charge in shaping the future of the industry.

Factory-based production reduces material waste, improves energy efficiency and allows for modules to be repurposed or relocated at the end of their lifecycle.

Modular is not quite mainstream but it is here to stay

For years, modular construction was seen as a stop-gap solution, often associated with temporary classrooms or site offices. That perception is long out of date.

Today, modular and portable buildings deliver permanent, high-performing facilities across healthcare, education and commercial sectors. Hospitals, schools and healthcare hubs are turning to modular because they need speed, certainty and minimal disruption and our industry delivers on all three.

The ability to construct modules offsite in controlled factory conditions means projects are faster to complete, safer to deliver and far more predictable than traditional methods. For clients, that means reduced risk, higher quality and the confidence that deadlines will be met without compromising standards.

Why MPBA membership matters

Being part of the MPBA is not just about association – it is about connection, credibility and opportunity. Membership delivers strategic value for stakeholders across the modular construction supply chain – from volumetric manufacturers and specialist subcontractors to logistics providers, architects, engineers and consultants.

Providing construction professionals with unparalleled access to technical expertise, regulatory guidance, strategic networking and workforce development resources – directly contributes to operational efficiency and competitive positioning.

Members gain access to a dedicated training centre, with specialist and online courses designed to upskill teams at every level. These programmes do not just cover technical know-how; they give professionals insight into best practice, compliance and innovation – keeping members ahead of the curve.

Membership also comes with visibility. Through our presence at conferences, exhibitions and events, MPBA champions the sector on a national stage, ensuring our members’ voices are heard in key industry conversations. Whether it is promoting new technologies or showcasing achievements – we make sure modular stays firmly on the agenda.
