{"id":156575,"date":"2025-10-30T12:22:38","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T12:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=156575"},"modified":"2025-10-30T12:22:38","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T12:22:38","slug":"south-mimms-data-centre-site-sold-for-3-9bn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/projects\/south-mimms-data-centre-site-sold-for-3-9bn\/156575\/","title":{"rendered":"South Mimms data centre site sold, paves way for \u00a33.9bn investment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The sale of the South Mimms data centre site by DC01UK to US firm Equinix is the first major step in establishing one of the UK&#8217;s largest data campuses, with a projected investment value of \u00a33.9bn to follow<\/h2>\n<p>The 85-acre<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/data-centres-boom-assessing-supply-chain-strains-amid-unprecedented-demand\/151447\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> data centre<\/a> site will be renamed the Hertfordshire Campus by Equinix and offer more than two million square feet of space, as approved by Hertsmere Borough Council&#8217;s planning committee earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Construction is currently believed to commence in 2027, with completion projected for 2030, in three &#8216;big build&#8217; phases.<\/p>\n<h3>DC01UK is a joint venture of Griggs Group and Chiltern Green Energy<\/h3>\n<p>James Craig, director of DC01UK, said: \u201cThis is a landmark moment for the UK and a powerful example of local entrepreneurship driving national innovation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The ambition behind the DC01UK project is extraordinary and we are delighted that the vision for this project will be taken forward by leading experts committed to delivering it to the highest standards, maintaining our ambition, realising the community benefits, and embedding themselves in the growth and future of Hertfordshire. For us, it\u2019s a proud moment that also marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter as we continue to progress other UK data centre development opportunities to drive further innovation and investment in this space across the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Co-director Andy Brewer added: \u201cThis deal marks a significant step forward for this world-class project and for the UK\u2019s digital future. It was born of local ingenuity and determination and aligns closely with the government\u2019s ambition for the UK to be a global leader in AI and advanced technology. With one of the world\u2019s largest operators now taking our vision forward, the project is entering an exciting new phase, one that will help position the UK at the forefront of the data revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; color: #111111;\">&#8220;A seismic moment for the UK\u2019s infrastructure landscape&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>Stephen Beard, global head of data centres at Knight Frank, who advised on the project, said: \u201cThis is a seismic moment for the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/besa-praises-data-centre-projects-building-services-growth\/152587\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> UK\u2019s infrastructure landscape<\/a>. The scale, ambition and strategic value of this site are unmatched. It\u2019s rare to find a location that ticks every box \u2013 power, connectivity, proximity to key markets \u2013 and this one does. Today\u2019s announcement gives the UK a major leg up in the global AI infrastructure race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deal was an influencing factor on the government&#8217;s decision to classify data centres as <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-statements\/detail\/2024-09-12\/HCWS89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Critical National Infrastructure <\/a>in 2024.
