{"id":157435,"date":"2025-11-28T13:19:57","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T13:19:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=157435"},"modified":"2025-11-28T13:19:57","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T13:19:57","slug":"plans-160m-glasgow-chinatown-redevelopment-unveiled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/projects\/plans-160m-glasgow-chinatown-redevelopment-unveiled\/157435\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans for \u00a3160m Glasgow Chinatown redevelopment unveiled"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The shopping centre in the area has had plans submitted to revamp the complex, revitalising the 1992 building<\/h2>\n<p>New City Burnside Ltd and Keltbray Developments, alongside the site owners, have submitted the plans to renew the 4.4 acre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinatownglasgow.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow Chinatown<\/a> complex.<\/p>\n<p>The plans have been drawn to respect the Chinese heritage of the area while reflecting modern standards and the local community.<\/p>\n<h3>The plan includes new areas<\/h3>\n<p>While current owners and tenants will be retained, the plans also include new residential apartments, student accommodation, and retail and leisure space.<\/p>\n<p>This is intended to contribute to tackling Glasgow\u2019s housing needs.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Burnside, Keltbray Developments associate director, said: \u201cThis is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine a site of deep cultural significance in Glasgow. We have been working closely with Robin of Glasgow Chinatown for a number of years to develop a shared vision for the area \u2013 one that honours its heritage while embracing the future and I am excited to now share this vision with the local community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robin Lim, Glasgow Chinatown, said: \u201cWe\u2019re excited to see plans for Chinatown taking shape. This is about more than development \u2013 it\u2019s about securing a vibrant future for a place that sits at the heart of Glasgow\u2019s Chinese community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlasgow\u2019s Chinatown shopping mall was created in the early 1990s to provide a dedicated space for the Chinese community to come together. While it has served that purpose for many years, feedback from residents, businesses, and stakeholders makes it clear that now is the right time to update and regenerate the area. We believe Andrew and Keltbray not only have the expertise, but also share the vision needed to create a space that meets modern needs while celebrating Chinatown\u2019s unique heritage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a real opportunity to build a place that not only serves the community but becomes a destination the whole city can enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Investing in Scotland<\/h3>\n<p>In July, \u00a366m was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/scottish-transport-investment-worth-66m-announced\/153454\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced to be invested<\/a> in Scottish transport, including improving transport links between Glasgow Airport and Palsley Town Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Funds will also be put towards improving the B714 link between Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston and Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Scotland Secretary Ian Murray said: \u201cThis \u00a366m investment in Scotland\u2019s roads demonstrates the UK Government\u2019s commitment to improving infrastructure and driving economic growth in all parts of the UK as part of our Plan for Change. This investment will make a real difference to people\u2019s daily lives and to the local economies of the South of Scotland, Ayrshire and Renfrewshire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew road links will connect Paisley town centre with Glasgow Airport and the new advanced manufacturing innovation district, to boost high value manufacturing in Renfrewshire. The upgrade to the B714 will speed up journeys between Glasgow and the three towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston, as well as cutting traffic in Kilwinning. And the A75 is strategically important just not within but beyond Scotland. Its upgrading is long overdue.
