{"id":158633,"date":"2026-01-23T14:14:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T14:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=158633"},"modified":"2026-01-23T14:15:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T14:15:49","slug":"largest-uk-antarctic-construction-project-completes-on-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/projects\/largest-uk-antarctic-construction-project-completes-on-time\/158633\/","title":{"rendered":"[VIDEO]Largest UK Antarctic construction project completes on time"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>UK-Antarctic construction project, the \u2018Discovery Building\u2019, is designed to cut carbon emissions at Rothera Research Station by 25%<\/h2>\n<p>The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has officially opened the \u00a3100m Discovery Building at Rothera Research Station, marking the on-time and on-budget delivery of the largest construction project ever undertaken by the UK in Antarctica.<\/p>\n<h3>A six-year project, where materials had to travel more than 8,000 miles to site<\/h3>\n<p>The facility was delivered as part of the government-funded \u00a3670m Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP) in partnership with BAM, Ramboll, Sweco, G&amp;A Barnie Group, Turner and Townsend and Hugh Broughton Architects.<\/p>\n<p>The Discovery Building, with an internal floor area of 4,500 square metres, features over 100 rooms and spaces spread over two floors and will serve as the operational hub of the UK&#8217;s main Antarctic research station, providing all power, drinking water, and communications.<\/p>\n<p>The new facility replaces ageing infrastructure spread across multiple buildings and is designed to provide a safer and more efficient environment for staff, alongside reducing station carbon emissions by 25% through improved energy efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch a tour of the Discovery Building below:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yPVhvKJIIQg?si=xV1v3DAeUfjjXqI4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Phased deconstruction will now begin<\/h3>\n<p>With the Discovery Building now operational, the AIMP team has begun the phased deconstruction of six redundant buildings, with three already completed, one in progress and two more to be undertaken this Antarctic summer season. Deconstruction is a carefully managed process used in place of demolition, deconstructing elements piece-by-piece, to minimise environmental impact and to allow materials and waste to be managed in a controlled and responsible way.<\/p>\n<p>Waste is being consolidated into shipping containers by site teams to optimise freight movements, with excavated areas and former foundations backfilled following removal. The UK has long been a leader in polar science and this government investment in modern, state of the art facilities will enable current and future generations of researchers to tackle shared challenges with our international partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elen Jones, AIMP director at British Antarctic Survey, said:\u00a0 \u201cThe Antarctic Infrastructure Programme is the largest investment in our polar infrastructure for decades and this is a huge milestone in that programme.
