\nIn heat pumps, this means heat loss calculations, understanding your source temperatures, emitter sizing, equipment selection and understanding how a building actually behaves.<\/p>\n

Sin: Presumption<\/strong>
\nSkipping design, copying past installs, or assuming \u201cone size fits all\u201d, like the good old combi boiler that deleted so much knowledge from heating system installers.<\/p>\n

Most heat pump failures are decided before the unit is even selected.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. Temperance<\/span><\/h4>\n

(Load-side temperature)<\/em><\/p>\n

Virtue:<\/strong> Temperance is restraint.
\nLower flow temperatures are not a compromise\u2014they are the operating condition that unlocks efficiency, comfort, and longevity.<\/p>\n

\nDesigning around unnecessarily high temperatures to preserve old assumptions from the fossil fuel era.<\/p>\n

\nDomestic hot water is about peaks, hygiene, storage, and timing\u2014not just setpoints.<\/p>\n

\nBackup heat, PV, batteries, grid flexibility, and legacy systems should cooperate\u2014not compete.<\/p>\n

\nLayering systems without logic results in fighting controls and confused outcomes.<\/p>\n

A system that isn\u2019t integrated will eventually choose its own priorities\u2014and they won\u2019t be yours.<\/strong><\/p>\n

6. Respect<\/span><\/h4>\n

It is easy to talk about virtues in theory. It is much harder to practice them when the building is a Grade I listed moated manor house<\/strong>, the fabric cannot be altered freely, and failure risks damaging irreplaceable heritage.<\/p>\n

Baddesley Clinton, a National Trust property in Warwickshire, is precisely the kind of project where heat pumps are often dismissed as \u201cunsuitable.\u201d And yet, it is here that the Seven Virtues of a good heat pump system are most clearly demonstrated \u2014 not as ideals, but as necessities.<\/p>\n

1. Prudence: Design Before Decision<\/span><\/h4>\n

At Baddesley Clinton, the most important choice was made long before any equipment was selected: to design first.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Replacing LPG boilers as part of the National Trust\u2019s Renewable Energy Investment programme required a system that could decarbonise heat without compromising conservation. That meant detailed technical design at RIBA Stage 4<\/strong>, with careful consideration of building fabric, usage patterns, and conservation requirements.<\/p>\n

An expansive park and gardens, yet with restrictions on the size of collector area required the installation of six-pipe two layer horizontal collector<\/strong>, providing a stable, low-carbon heat source without visual intrusion. The heat pumps, variable-speed circulation pumps, weather compensation, and supervisory controls operate as a single system. Backup strategies, control logic, and conservation requirements are aligned rather than layered on top of one another.<\/p>\n
