{"id":162487,"date":"2026-05-29T13:58:40","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T12:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=162487"},"modified":"2026-05-29T13:58:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T12:58:40","slug":"government-offers-300000-new-work-experience-placements-to-key-sectors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/government-offers-300000-new-work-experience-placements-to-key-sectors\/162487\/","title":{"rendered":"Government offers 300,000 new work experience placements to key sectors"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Young people across the country will be helped onto the career ladder thanks to the creation of 300,000 new work experience placements in sectors including construction<\/h2>\n<p>The new work experience placements, part of a \u00a32.5bn youth employment support package, will enable young people to gain hands-on experience, build real skills, and move into sustained work.<\/p>\n<p>They come as the Government accelerates its Youth Guarantee to give every young person the chance to earn or learn and to reverse the rising numbers of young people not in education, employment, or training (NEET), currently standing at just over one million.<\/p>\n<h3>Work experience and training could help boost construction skills<\/h3>\n<p>Currently, there is a clear mismatch between the industry\u2019s current trajectory and the government\u2019s ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis by Protrade revealed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/glass-half-full-state-of-construction-apprenticeships-2026\/161706\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.5% increase in new construction apprentices<\/a> in 2024-25, reversing the downward trend that plagued previous years. However, it noted that the UK is still facing significant structural weaknesses in the construction skills system.<\/p>\n<p>The Construction Industry Training Board\u2019s forecast also echoes the mismatch. An <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/writtenevidence\/130738\/pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additional 240,000 workers<\/a> are needed by 2030 \u2013 around 48,000 each year to meet the government\u2019s housing targets.
