Six projects have been listed as contenders for the Stirling Prize, with the winner to be announced in October<\/h2>\n

The RIBA<\/a> Stirling Prize for 2026 sees projects rejuvenating buildings, creating new homes and hubs, and improving sustainability.<\/p>\n

The six projects under consideration are listed below with their RIBA descriptions:<\/p>\n

A house at Fairmead, High Beach, Epping Forest \u2013 Sergison Bates<\/h3>\n

Set on the edge of\u202fEpping Forest, this family home responds sensitively to its rural setting through restrained material choice and a dignified design sensibility. Varied\u202fbrickwork\u202fand windows of differing shapes and sizes\u202fappear to dance\u202facross the\u202ffacade, giving the building an expressive form. Considered construction techniques, including insulating clay blocks finished with lime plaster,\u202fallow the structure to both release heat gradually \u2013 regulating temperature \u2013 and reduce noise.<\/p>\n

Inside, the house is organised\u202faround a dramatic 4.5m high living room bathed in natural light,\u202fwhile conventional corridors are replaced with\u202fdeep\u202fopenings in thick walls\u202fto link each room,\u202fcreating a\u202fsequence\u202fof distinct yet interconnected spaces.\u202f The architecture is at once domestic, playing a generous and sociable host to the rituals of everyday life yet capable of imagining the milestones that give shape to a year.<\/p>\n

BEAM, Hertfordshire \u2013 Bennetts Associates<\/h3>\n

Located on the banks of the River Lea, this new\u202fmulti-functional arts\u202fvenue\u202fis an exemplar of intelligent and imaginative civic reuse.\u202fInstead of demolishing the ageing\u202f1970s\u202fHertford Theatre, the council-led project\u202fretains\u202fthe original structure, wrapping it in a new striking\u202fhexagonal\u202fbrick form that houses a cinema and events space.\u202fExtensive use of cross-laminated timber, an all-electric energy supply and crucially the retention of the\u202foriginal\u202fbuilding,\u202festablishes\u202fBEAM as a compelling model for retrofit.<\/p>\n

The design carefully and skilfully creates an animated building form that sits comfortably within the historic townscape and yet at the same time signals BEAM\u2019s important civic role. The new form seems to anticipate the drama, materiality and energy of the fine new and rediscovered interiors.<\/p>\n

Lion Green Road \u2013 Mary Duggan Architects and RUFF Architects<\/h3>\n

Providing\u202fan equal mix of affordable and private housing,\u202fLion Green Road offers\u202f157 dwellings,\u202fclustered into five prismatic 13-sided blocks that quietly traverse the green hillside of Coulsdon.\u202fA landscape-first approach softens the scheme\u2019s underlying density, with winding paths and generous planting weaving between and connecting together the\u202fblocks. Shared communal outdoor areas, from play spaces to quiet seating areas, foster a sense of community.<\/p>\n

Inside,\u202fgenerous, dual-aspect homes maximise daylight and natural\u202fventilation\u202ffor residents. The plans both at a site and at an individual flat floor plan levels reveal a skilful resolution of complex geometries. The design offers an innovative and imaginative approach to high\u202fdensity\u202fsuburban housing.<\/p>\n

Paddington Square \u2013 Renzo Piano Building Workshop (Paris) and Adamson Associates (London)<\/h3>\n

A\u202flong-standing\u202fdisconnected\u202fsite\u202fhas been reimagined with\u202fpublic realm at its heart, creating a welcoming destination for one of London\u2019s busiest transport interchanges. A generous new public square creates space to pause, meet and gather, while step-free routes and intuitive connections make journeys easier and more inclusive for millions of people.\u202fAbove ground, the building’s\u202fglass facade\u202facts\u202fas a \u201cdelicate veil\u201d,\u202fshifting\u202fbetween reflective and transparent qualities\u202fto give the\u202fsubstantial\u202fstructure an unexpectedly ethereal presence.<\/p>\n

Pembroke, Mill Lane \u2013 Haworth Tompkins<\/h3>\n

The\u202fmost significant expansion of Pembroke College since the fourteenth century, this sensitive project carefully weaves together new and existing buildings\u202fwithin\u202fCambridge’s\u202fHistoric Core Conservation Area.<\/p>\n

Six existing buildings have been carefully retrofitted,\u202fbenefiting\u202ffrom upgraded\u202finsulation, improved\u202fglazing\u202fand enhanced thermal performance, while the six new buildings\u202femploy\u202fpassive design\u202fmeasures, including triple glazing, exposed thermal mass and\u202fphotovoltaic\u202fpanels to reduce energy consumption.\u202f\u202fOpen-air timber-framed walkways and biodiverse gardens stitch together the old and new sites, helping\u202fopen up\u202fthe college to the public and resulting in a campus that balances heritage, sustainability and requirements for modern use. The success of the project lies in the great skill and care taken to navigate the demands of the sensitive historic context with a mind set on the future. There is a sense both of continuity and the contemporary, each are comfortable in the other\u2019s presence.<\/p>\n

River Wing, Clare College \u2013 Witherford Watson Mann Architects<\/h3>\n

A\u202fnew wing for the Grade I-listed Clare College in Cambridge, sensitively transforms a series of underused and undervalued spaces into a warm, informal setting.\u202fConstrained site access, highly protected heritage buildings and site with flood and drainage risks\u202fhave been\u202fskilfully\u202fnavigated to create a beautifully judged dining space for students and staff. Impeccable\u202fdetailing and a restrained palette of oak, for structure and wall panelling, sit on Purbeck stone floors complementing the building’s existing brick walls.<\/p>\n

There is an obvious respect for the surrounding college buildings. As they unfold towards the river, the new interiors are of rare poetic quality. This work is contemporary in reality yet ancient in its sensibility, a remarkable illustration of the architects art.<\/p>\n

\u201cShows us what architecture can achieve\u201d<\/h3>\n

RIBA are handing out several awards for outstanding design, such as in the Canada Water Plot K1, Southwark, which received the 2026 UK RIBA London Award. Delivering on the brief of creating 79 affordable dwellings, the project has been recognised for its design, use of a red-brick fa\u00e7ade, and green metalwork in the balconies.<\/p>\n

Of the Stirling Prize shortlist, RIBA president, Chris Williamson, said:
