{"id":165537,"date":"2026-09-09T12:15:07","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T11:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=165537"},"modified":"2026-09-09T12:15:07","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T11:15:07","slug":"new-white-paper-advocates-greater-use-wood-in-building-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/new-white-paper-advocates-greater-use-wood-in-building-design\/165537\/","title":{"rendered":"New white paper advocates for greater use of wood in building design"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>AkzoNobel is marking World Green Building Week with the launch of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/akzonobel-industrial-woodcoatings.com\/building-a-more-sustainable-future-with-wood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The case for wood in more sustainable buildings\u2019<\/a>, a new white paper developed in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam<\/h2>\n<p>The white paper examines how responsibly sourced and properly protected wood can support more sustainable building choices while delivering durability, robust performance and architectural quality.<\/p>\n<p>It also demonstrates how material selection and protective coating systems can work together to help reduce a building\u2019s overall lifecycle carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<h3>Wood-based window facades have lower carbon footprints than other materials<\/h3>\n<p>The paper presents findings from a comparative lifecycle assessment of representative fa\u00e7ade panels and window frames made from wood and other commonly used materials, including aluminium, steel and PVC.<\/p>\n<p>It considers the full lifecycle of each system, including material production, coating application, use, maintenance, transport and end-of-life scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis found that wood-based fa\u00e7ades and window frames had lower cradle-to-grave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/designing-for-longevity-sustainable-materials-shape-modern-build-projects\/165320\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon footprints<\/a> than non-wood alternatives. It also shows that the substrate drives most total carbon emissions, while coatings contribute a relatively small share, ranging from 4% to 37% of the assessed footprint depending on the material and application.<\/p>\n<h3>Practical implications of choosing wood in building design<\/h3>\n<p>The whitepaper highlights three practical implications for architects, engineers, developers and manufacturers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Material choice is the biggest lever: Selecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/timber-frame-housebuilding-low-carbon-journey-from-forest-to-front-door\/165286\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">timber<\/a> for suitable fa\u00e7ade and window applications has the potential to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions compared with aluminium, steel and PVC alternatives<\/li>\n<li>Durability should be assessed over the whole building life: High-quality coating systems can have a slightly higher initial carbon contribution, but can extend maintenance and repair intervals and reduce the likelihood of premature replacement<\/li>\n<li>Specification must be application-led: Timber, coating systems, design, installation and maintenance strategies need to be considered together to achieve the required performance over the intended service life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The wider value of timber in the built environment<\/h3>\n<p>The white paper also highlights timber&#8217;s wider value in the built environment.
