{"id":165872,"date":"2026-09-21T12:17:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T11:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=165872"},"modified":"2026-09-21T12:17:25","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T11:17:25","slug":"construction-losing-billions-a-year-to-soft-skills-shortages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-losing-billions-a-year-to-soft-skills-shortages\/165872\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction is losing billions a year to soft skills shortages"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The UK construction sector is struggling with a workforce skills shortage, leading to errors, delays, obstacles, and excessive hiring costs<\/h2>\n<p>According to a\u202fnew\u202freport,\u202f\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityandguilds.com\/news\/september-2026\/counting-the-cost-the-uk-employability-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Counting the Cost: The UK\u2019s Employability Skills Crisis\u2019<\/a> by\u202fCity &amp; Guilds, 83% of employers have been negatively impacted by the shortage of \u2018employability\u2019 skills like\u202fself &amp; time management, face-to-face communication\u202fand valuing customers.<\/p>\n<p>The report investigated the financial impact of this shortage on UK employers, calculating recruitment volumes, typical hiring costs, and agency fees in 2023.<\/p>\n<h3>A lack of construction skills is leading to high employee turnover<\/h3>\n<p>The data shows that 37% of construction employers linked a lack of employability skills to high staff turnover.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the net costs of employability skills shortages in the sector could run even higher, as employers must pay salaries for staff who leave without meeting expectations and use internal resources to onboard and train staff who do not stay with the business.<\/p>\n<p>Andy Moss, interim chief executive officer\u202fof City &amp; Guilds, explained: \u201cEmployers\u202fare telling us loud and clear that employability skills matter just as much as technical\u202fknow-how, if not more. Yet\u202fwe\u2019re\u202fnow\u202fseeing a growing human skills shortage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings\u202fconfirm that\u202fapprenticeships and vocational training are highly effective routes to developing the employability skills businesses\u202fneed,\u202ftogether with the\u202fpractical experience\u202fthat\u2019s\u202fcritical for success in today\u2019s workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Construction skills training needs to go back to basics<\/h3>\n<p>Writing last month for PBC Today, Dr Victoria Hills, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Building, emphasised the need to reform the system, get the training back to basics, and not let mergers and subsequent restructures delay much-needed change.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cSpeaking from personal experience of having worked for all three mayors of London, one thing they all had in common was a clear understanding of local employment, training and education and skills requirements.
