{"id":166032,"date":"2026-09-25T11:21:44","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T10:21:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=166032"},"modified":"2026-09-25T11:21:44","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T10:21:44","slug":"major-conservation-work-begins-at-glasgow-cathedral-spire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/projects\/major-conservation-work-begins-at-glasgow-cathedral-spire\/166032\/","title":{"rendered":"Major conservation work begins at Glasgow Cathedral spire"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicenvironment.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Historic Environment Scotland<\/a> (HES) has started a three-year project to protect one of Scotland\u2019s most historic landmarks \u2013 the spire of Glasgow Cathedral<\/h2>\n<p>Conservation work has begun to protect Glasgow Cathedral\u2019s medieval spire, which will bring a visible change to the city\u2019s skyline.<\/p>\n<p>The three-year HES programme will carefully dismantle and rebuild the head of the iconic 225ft spire to repair damaged stonework and secure its long-term future.<\/p>\n<p>David Borthwick, head of south region at HES, explained: \u201cGlasgow Cathedral is a defining part of the city\u2019s skyline and one of Scotland\u2019s great medieval buildings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/retrofit-in-heritage-delivery-skills-value-conservation\/161623\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservation work<\/a> on the spire has been ongoing, but detailed surveys have confirmed that the upper section of the spire must now be taken down and rebuilt to secure it for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The impact of climate change on Glasgow Cathedral\u2019s spire<\/h3>\n<p>Glasgow Cathedral is the oldest building in Glasgow and the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to have survived the Protestant Reformation of 1560 virtually intact.<\/p>\n<p>A steel frame was added inside the spire in 1970 to help support the medieval masonry.
