Driverless tractors have even appeared on our TV screens recently, but the real story is unfolding on building sites and infrastructure projects across the country.

Automation is becoming a serious answer to ongoing problems – how can we build more, faster, with fewer resources?

As pressure grows to build new housing, upgrade infrastructure, and deliver projects faster, automation is key to increasing productivity with less fuel, lower emissions, and fewer resources.

The challenge – doing more with less

For years, construction machines have been becoming progressively smarter. Excavators and bulldozers can already use digital designs to help operators dig, grade and shape the ground more accurately.

Newer systems are automating more of those movements, while manufacturers are also developing autonomous machines that could eventually carry out certain tasks with far less human input.

Mining offers a glimpse of where that journey can lead: autonomous haul trucks have been operating at large sites for years, moving huge quantities of material without a driver in the cab.

These developments sit along a spectrum – machine guidance and digital progress measurement are in use today, while fully autonomous operations remain a longer-term goal for many construction sites.

For construction, the challenge is particularly significant. The world needs more homes and infrastructure, while projects are under pressure to become faster, more affordable and less carbon-intensive.

At the same time, a shortage of skilled workers and rising operating costs are making it harder for businesses to simply throw more people and machinery at the problem.

This is where automation becomes more than a futuristic idea. If a machine can carry out a task more accurately, with fewer unnecessary movements and less downtime, the impact isn’t simply that a contractor saves a few hours.

Across a major project, those small efficiencies can mean less fuel consumed, fewer resources wasted, and projects completed weeks earlier, and much of the technology needed already exists.

Machine control, digital surveying, connected machinery and drone technology have been building the foundations for increasingly automated operations for years.

One challenge is the environment in which construction machines work. A construction site changes daily, with different trades, ground conditions, and logistics from one job to the next. Machines can already dig and steer with automated guidance, but coordinating their work with people and other machines requires reliable information about what is happening across the site.

Connectivity on large or remote sites adds another layer of complexity. For autonomous machines to work effectively alongside people and other machines, the whole site needs to become more connected.

The solution – making the whole site smarter

Automation in construction is not a single leap from a person operating a machine to a driverless site. It is a series of changes in how work is planned, carried out and checked.

Digital designs can guide machines as they dig or grade. Machines can then record completed work, giving project teams a more current picture of progress. When that information is used to update the plan, teams can make decisions based on what has happened on site, rather than relying only on separate surveys and manual reporting.

That matters because earthworks depend on sequence as well as accuracy: what material needs to be moved, where it needs to go and when. Better information can help teams avoid unnecessary movement and rework. It can also give operators and project managers more time to handle exceptions and coordinate the next stage of work.

The next step is to connect those activities across the site. That is difficult because sites change constantly. Ground conditions shift, plans are revised, and people and machines need to work safely alongside one another. Reliable data, connectivity and coordination between systems all matter. A machine performing a task automatically is only part of the picture; the wider operation needs to know what has been done and what should happen next.

Putting automation in construction into practice

On a recent Yorkshire Water project delivered by Mott MacDonald Bentley, AI optimised cut-and-fill sequences, the order and locations for excavating and placing material. Machines also digitally captured completed work, providing progress measurements comparable to those a land surveyor would collect.

That gave the project team a clearer record of completed earthworks and how the work was progressing against the plan. The project finished three weeks earlier than first predicted, with a reported £350,000 cost saving.

The value here is not simply that a machine moved material. It is that planning, machine activity and progress measurement were connected. That is a practical form of automation already available to construction teams, and it can support better decisions about time, resources and what happens next.

As these systems become more connected, they can help people spend less time gathering and reconciling information and more time managing the work. That is how today’s digital tools can lay the groundwork for more automated operations over time.

Ian De Dobbelaere, commercial project manager at Komatsu Smart Construction, offers insight into how autonomous technology is transforming productivity and why making machines more intelligent could have implications far beyond the industries they operate in.

[38487,141293
94656,173154,172950
{"0":"post-166570","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-construction-technology-news","8":"category-digital-construction-news","9":"tag-digital","10":"tag-exclusive","11":"tag-robotics

Automation in construction is shifting

<meta property="og:site_name" content="Planning, Building &
