A transformational refurbishment of Huddersfield Open Market will give the historic Grade II* Listed Market Hall a new lease of life for communities and future generations<\/h2>\n

Huddersfield Market is undergoing a \u00a316.5m redevelopment project<\/a>, with Willmott Dixon delivering \u00a314.9m of construction works when the contractor gets underway this month.<\/p>\n

Completion is scheduled for Spring 2028.<\/p>\n

Cllr John Hardie, cabinet member for regeneration, highways and transport, explained: \u201cRegenerating the historic market hall to secure its future, protect its heritage and build on the existing market offer, Huddersfield has been moving to its next exciting stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople will have seen work take place on preparing the site for the renovation, but they will now see a lot more activity around this beautiful Grade II* listed building.\u201d<\/p>\n

Refurbishing while honouring the market\u2019s history<\/h3>\n

Originally built in 1887, the market\u2019s history will be honoured, restored and future-proofed. The project will create a new hospitality offering, including a market caf\u00e9, hot food units, a mezzanine seating area, and a bar.<\/p>\n

Externally, the market will benefit from timber<\/a> and cast-iron frame repairs, a full repaint, and new curtain walling to replace the existing roller shutters.<\/p>\n

The adjoining annex building will undergo an internal demolition, with a new office for the market team and public restroom facilities to be installed.<\/p>\n

The regeneration will also include essential repairs and restoration, including reinstating its original colour scheme of traditional reds, pinks, and creams, honouring the building\u2019s heritage.<\/p>\n

New automated entrances and accessible WCs<\/a>, changing places, and shower rooms will improve accessibility.<\/p>\n

Huddersfield Market will run 6 days a week once construction is complete<\/h3>\n

The new market will support a vibrant calendar of events and aim to operate six days a week, with increased footfall supporting existing market traders and attracting new traders and visitors.<\/p>\n

As part of the works, Willmott Dixon has created a temporary market structure adjacent to the site to accommodate the market traders.<\/p>\n

Supporting the town centre and local traders for years to come<\/h3>\n

Chris Yates, Yorkshire director for Willmott Dixon, said: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to be working in partnership with Kirklees Council to deliver a transformation of the historic Huddersfield Market.<\/p>\n
