Hundreds of workers are set to lose their jobs at a construction machine factory in Desford…

Construction machine giant Caterpillar has announced hundreds of workers will lose their jobs at their Desford plant. The 260 agency workers, who had been contracted through Randstad, were let go due to lower production volumes.

The workers, who had been in place for a number of months, said the news came out of the blue.

A spokesperson for Caterpillar Building Construction Products Division confirmed around 260 temporary workers had been let go.

He said: “This is a result of lower production volumes. The facility has a permanent workforce of about 1,500 employees.

“We understand this is difficult for temporary workers and their families and regret this action is necessary but we have to take these measures to keep our business positioned for future success.”

The facility at Desford produces small construction machines that are typically used on building and construction sites. This includes products such as backhoe loaders and compact wheel loaders.
