Major contractor Carillion Construction has been fined and ordered to pay costs after a railway worker was killed on a job\u2026<\/span><\/h2>\n

A major contractor has been fined for breaching health and safety laws, which led to the death of an employee.<\/p>\n

Scott Dobson was carrying out maintenance work on the railway near Saxilby, Lincolnshire, when he was hit by passing train. The incident, which occurred on the 4 December 2014, unfortunately led to the death of Mr Dobson.<\/p>\n

The Office of Rail Regulation<\/span><\/a> investigators found a number of failings in the planning and management of the work. It was revealed that only one of the two railway lines had been shut down while maintenance was being undertaken, but both lines should have been closed.<\/p>\n

Carillion Construction<\/span><\/a> pleaded guilty at Lincoln Crown Court. The firm was fined \u00a3200,000 and ordered to pay costs of \u00a336,570.39.<\/p>\n

Ian Prosser, HM Chief Inspector of Railways, said: \u201cThis accident was wholly avoidable, had Carillion Construction Ltd followed health and safety rules set out for the railways. Our sympathies are with Mr Dobson\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe safety of workers and passengers is a top priority for the regulator, which is why ORR inspectors are out on the railway daily, monitoring to ensure safety isn\u2019t compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n
