{"id":26162,"date":"2016-08-17T09:42:32","date_gmt":"2016-08-17T09:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/planningandbuildingcontroltoday.co.uk\/?p=25424"},"modified":"2016-11-23T12:50:04","modified_gmt":"2016-11-23T12:50:04","slug":"new-partnership-launched-sustainable-infrastructure-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/new-partnership-launched-sustainable-infrastructure-research\/26162\/","title":{"rendered":"New partnership launched into sustainable infrastructure research"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span>AECOM and the University of Salford have come together to investigate how major infrastructure projects impact the environment\u2026<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A new partnership has been struck to discover the impact of infrastructure projects on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental consultancy firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aecom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>AECOM<\/span><\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salford.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>University of Salford<\/span><\/a> will work together to investigate the issue, after the Mersey Gateway Project sparked the need for further research.<\/p>\n<p>The project was a six lane toll bridge that is set to span the River Mersey. It is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the UK and will see AECOM offer advice on the complex and sensitive estuarine environment in the surrounding construction area. From this, AECOM decided to pursue this topic further to help the future of sustainable construction.<\/p>\n<p>The new partnership will look at building projects in \u201cenvironmentally sensitive\u201d areas and how large infrastructure projects disrupt biodiversity during the construction process.<\/p>\n<p>AECOM\u2019s chief executive of environment and ground engineering for Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa Peter Skinner said: \u201cShaping research so that it is applicable to specific projects provides students with opportunities to make a tangible difference to both academia and industry through their learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreater collaboration between universities and the private sector will make an important contribution to mitigating the impact of infrastructure on the environment and protecting the natural world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAECOM is proud to be working with the University of Salford on this initiative to increase understanding of the environmental and ecological aspects of infrastructure projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University of Salford\u2019s vice chancellor for research and enterprise Nigel Mellor said: \u201cThis partnership will provide a unique opportunity for both parties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt fits into our aim of focusing our research at real life challenges and to deliver real life impact for society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will also give our students the chance to get involved in a live project and help them develop key skills for industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"mk-custom-module-container\">\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AECOM and the University of Salford have come together to investigate how major infrastructure projects impact the environment\u2026 A new partnership has been struck to discover the impact of infrastructure projects on the environment.
